Manziel Enters Rehab

I am not a doctor but from what I hear most people treated for alcoholism do not have a pure "physical dependency" as compared with other drugs such as heroin, etc... And it is more habitual and psychological. Not trying to lump it in with the Starbucks addict by any means but I think it is in most cases somewhat different than other drug addictions. It is definitely a serious problem though.

Your Body physically changes and alters its chemistry to rely on processing alcohol. When you stop as a true alcoholic you definitely can die as your organs fail. This is a more devastating process than even Coke or Heroin...which is no picnic.

The browns are now under investigation for cheating by using cell phones on the sidelines. They could loose draft picks. Things continue to get worse for the browns.

Now I can't help but wonder if the browns improvement last year was due to cheating.

It seems that there are some teams in the NFL,like the Browns, that cannot succeed, when bad things start to happen to them it just keeps on coming, having a snowball type effect on the team.

Agreed.  Was not trying to diminish the physical dependencies and life threatening issues caused by the disease/disorder.  Was only referencing a study I read regarding treatment of "alcoholism vs a dependent alcoholic" and in hindsight should have distinguished how I was differentiating the two.  Regardless I agree both should be monitored under a doctor's care and both are serious.

Use whatever label you want, but it's not a simple matter of choosing to drink or not.

The choice is obviously made more difficult when you began to react with physical sickness and the emotional roller coasters that come along with making that change. If it's a mental thing then he may need to learn how to make positive changes to avoid consumption but I hope it hasn't gotten to the point of becoming a physical addiction.

The problem with any substance is that it alters the way dopamine and serotonin are delivered to the brain, which alters behavior and can result in that mental dependency. It isn't as simple as a choice for everyone and I recommend you read more into brain chemistry. It being a "choice" is an obvious blanket statement but it really isn't so easy for everyone.

Johnny Fail lol..what an awful obvious train wreck he was projecting to be. I believe this is only for BS posturing to blame something else for his lack of work ethic, maturity and ability to perform at a high(not coke high) level.

His potential has capped in college.

OR his problems in college and his lack of preparation actually are partly because of his alcohol consumption. It was known that he was a partier, but he may be a lone drinker as well which obviously would detract from him studying the game. What treatment will do is teach him ways to overcome the thoughts and form new habits which will translate to him spending more time studying football and prepping for games.

This is a good first step for him and if he grows and learns from this before he really makes the mistake of getting a DUI and into a car accident or failing a few drug tests he should progress as a player on the field. I'm not a fan of any one person or football player and I don't hate any one football player. I enjoy giving people the benefit of the doubt and someone trying to make positive changes in their life should not be belittled by people like you.

I'm gonna sound really cynical when I say this, but part of me wonders if this isn't more about image.

Specifically, the idea would be to give him something to blame his awful performance on.

I think he's used to being thought of as a badass and now he's thought of as a joke. He probably had the realization that if he is going to succeed in the NFL, he's going to have to work hard and clean up his act. Whether or not he's truly serious about it, we'll see.

I'm guessing if he gets clean and still fails in the NFL (which is a very real possibility), it could result in a huge downward spiral.

The issue is not Johnny Manziel, if you're a Cleveland fan.

It should be the front office for drafting this guy strictly for publicity. Later, benching their relatively successful starter for him (who put up a better than expected record, when Manziel obviously wasn't ready),  just to watch Manziel go out two games later, and eventually enter rehab.
