Covered only with goosebumps, a Troy man was arrested and hospitalized after police say they stopped him as he ran naked along 12 Mile Road in Madison Heights.

The man, 25, was running west on 12 Mile near Stephenson Highway about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday when several motorists called police.

Temperatures were in the low 20s with 9 mph winds making it feel like 10 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake Township.

“Several officers responded,” said Madison Heights Detective Sgt. Mark Zupic. “One officer went up to the man and tried to get him in a patrol car.

The man told the officer:’I need to go where the sun is at.’”

The unnamed man then took off running along 12 Mile in the direction of the sun, police said.

Police chased the man and caught up with him a short distance away.

Police drove the man to St. John Hospital on Dequindre and he was admitted there for psychiatric observation and evaluation.

“He did tell an officer that he had smoked some weed,” Zupic said.
