Breaking News - Gettlemagic Selects Defensive End on the first Round.

Well we do NEED a defensive end now or next year.

If that player is the BPA and is vetted to fit system, culture and win in big moments type that Gentlemen has made comments about,..

Then I wont blink.

We NEED DE WR OT SS now. So those positions I think will be vetted the hardest and slotted BPA for the first round.

If Gentlemen also has a CB or OLB in there then it may happen.

Anything else such as OG, RB, DT, TE, FS etc will be in there as well, but look for later rounds again. Dwan is old, Boston showed flashes but who knows, etc.

All are needs, just depends on now and makes an instant impact or makes the leap to impact or at least contributor later.

Here is what we know:

A. He said (basically) that he is drafting for 2016 more than 2015.  In 2016, CJ's ridiculous contract (guaranteed and backloaded) is finally manageable.  Cutting him (if necessary) saves $11m.  I think Gettlemen is positioning himself so that CJ does not have us by the balls--and DE is a need anyway.  So much depends on Frank Alexander, doesn't it?

B. The draft is pretty loaded at DE and there are only so many 4-3 teams who will be drafting the 4-3 DEs--I am guessing there will be about 14 or 15 4-3 defenses run next year.  Of course, they can always use a stud DE at OLB in the 3-4, but there is only 1 spot on the 3-4 and a reach to try to convert a first rounder to OLB (and vica versa).  I would say the draft is loaded in the top half of the first and then there are solid players in rounds 2-4 as projected now.  So, I can see a DE if one drops.

C.  The situation at DE is also applicable with players who are being projected by the "experts" on the internet as true Left Tackles.  They are Peat, Flowers, and Donavan Smith.  Others, like Scherff, Collins, Clemmings, etc. are being promoted as possible Guards or Right tackles.  In addition, I do not think that Peat and Flowers are legitimate early first rounders.  I think they should be there when we pick, according to talent and ignoring the supply and demand.  So, I do not see Gettlemen drafting a pure LT in round one.  He may grab Collins or even Erving, but at 25, I have a feeling the talent level for LT is going to be disappointing.

D.  Fortunately, the draft is also loaded at WR.  Since so many teams took a WR last year and they had so much success, it could mean the apprehension over taking a WR in the first is removed and more will take one this year, or that the need is now diminished.  I am looking at the defensive players who are coming out and it is loaded on that side of the ball.  DB is weak, but the front 7 players--primarily DL--is loaded. It is possible that a top 3 WR drops to us.  Devante Parker, for example.  If not, I see a pretty big drop off after Parker and am not sure if a WR is the BPA at 25-one that meets our needs, anyway.

E.  So what position could be sitting there at 25 if not a DE, OT, or WR?   Defensive Tackle.  Leonard Williams, Danny Shelton, and Eddie Goldman will probably be gone, but there is no great dropoff after the top 3 at DT as with OT, DE, and WR.  Next you have Malcolm Brown, Michael Bennett, and my personal favorite for the Panthers at DT: Jordan Phillips.

If you assume that 2 QBs, 2 DBs, and 3 LBs are taken before 25, that still leaves 18 picks.  It is easy to see Gettlemen not getting the pick he wants at DE, OT, or WR, but hard to imagine 5 DTs are gone.

Which leads me to this question:  How would you feel if he drafted Melvin Gordon?  It is possible that he is the BPA.  Personally, I hope not.

I can see it now

DE in the first, people some will whine.  Then the new guy will partner with Star, KK, and Ealy (the latter two of which also upset some when drafted) and create a DL that will terrorize the NFL for the next decade.  Then those that whined on one (or all three) will praise how great GM is.

Free agency for this year, draft may lean toward 2016.  I think he said something like that once--you use free agency to fill immediate needs, the draft to build your team--something like that.  However, after 2014, his philosophy might be different.

If you look at free agency, knowing what we know about Gettlemen, here is what I see:

The Tackle crop sucks.  However, he can find people nobody has ever heard of and they plug right in (Remmers, Whitakker, Glanton, etc).  But to ask him to find a LT?

I think he will address lower-cost positions like rotational DT in free agency.  He could even find a CB who was misused and would be better in our system. Cason, for example, was a terrible fit, but I really think that one came from Rivera.

To me, Torrey Smith is the perfect fit here, and I would spend Target prices to get him here (opposed to the Dollar Store).  It also seems fitting that we would swap WRs named Smith with Baltimore. If he wears 89, I can keep my jersey.

I would not be surprised to see him bring in a S and a free agent TE.

In what world are Strahan, Ealy and Luke undersized? Strahan and Ealy are both 6'5" 275 and Luke is 6'3" 240. That's pretty much ideal for their respective positions.

Early put on a little weight since he's been in the league. He can still add some more muscle. Strahan's playing weight was 255, and Luke just said in his most recent interview that he is 235 (and 250 lbs is pretty much the ideal weight). Of course every player is different, so weight is not the most important issue for these guys.

Strengthening the D line is always good but seattles secondary is on a level where every QB in the league is literally afraid to throw against them. I want us to have the same thing. I think our d line is good enough baring we dont let any of the current guys walk

Can't be any worse than Harper, Decoud, or Boston it's just impossible.

But that's not really the point. You don't neglect a blue chip player at another position in order to get a safety that is not. Furthermore, it's safe to assume that Boston will only get better. Take in the fact that it was his rookie year, and it began with an injury, the book is just beginning to be written on the kid.

Tre was caught out of position way to many times for my taste. Consider that his weakness in college was that he was prone to getting beat deep and the problem still hasn't been fixed I just believe there are far better prospects out there.

I was also exaggerating when I said take a safety of course I dont want us to reach that would be stupid. Im just saying if there is a safety sitting at 25 that warrants being the 25th person drafted then take him.
