Does Gettleman Send a Message to Cam This Offseason?

Personnel around him is a must.  He needs another WR and a legit LT--personally, a really good blocking FB/Hback too, one that can pick up blitzes.  That would be meeting Cam half way---some of you are acting as if we get studs around him, problem solved.  I think Cam is probably ready to take it to the next level.  That means he has an offseason like Thomas Davis and Beason used to--working his butt off, stepping into throws and watching hours of film.  If all that stuff happens, nobody can beat the Panthers.

Hopefully, digging ourselves out of the cap mess we were in will fix the offense.  I've thrown this quote out before, but I'll say it again because I think it's so important, and its something I didn't think about enough before Gettleman said it.  "If you are looking for instant gratification, you're gonna get burned."  Very few teams in the league have had sustained success.. and I think its because its so hard to build for the future when everyone wants to win now..

You have to be patient building a roster, and you have to be good at finding value in the lower half of your roster.  You have to always think about the future, while remaining competitive in the present...which is very difficult to do.  Gettleman is going to improve the offense, but hes not going to jeopardize our future in order to do it.

He needs a good LT.

He needs a speed receiver like Ginn to take the top off of the defense.

He needs an all pro center.

He needs an all pro TE.

He needs a top 3 defense.

He needs Steve Smith.

What I don't understand is that he had all of that in 2013 and the offense was pretty much the same statistically.

I remember now.....we didn't have a number 2 receiver. Whatever happened to that guy?

In all seriousness I agree that our offense needs some upgrades but there always seems to be some excuse and it's usually "if we had player x we would be unstoppable". Sometimes the players that are there need to play better and/or coaches need to coach better.

What we need is a OC that can optimize our offensive personnel.

Bubble screens to Bersin, flea flickers to cotch, and hb draws against Seattle on 3rd and 20 with the game on the line is the bigger issue for our team IMO.

Acquiring and building talent takes years, through the draft and FA, things that DG has proved he is successful at.

I think we are winning that battle and are definitely on the upswing.

I cannot say the same for the other half of the equation which, opposed to years of building talent, could be handled in a single off season.

We won 12 games that year. We lost mostly all the stuff you listed and won 7. You just made a very good argument why those "excuses" are valid.

Give cam a better line a top 5 defense and weapons and we win games. Wow that's just crazy right?

Gettleman needs to resign Cam Newton before the season if he thinks Cam is our franchise QB of the future. The remaing pieces that Cam needs to be surrounded by, may take another year,so get his contract taken care of now and work on the pieces surrounding him as we go.

The problem is, it may be Cam holding the deal up. Maybe he wants to see those "pieces" before he commits long term.

The way I see things unfolding is as follows. We are going to sign a mid-tier OT that will compete at LT. He may or may not be our starting LT on day one of 2015 season. We are going to find a solid veteran receiver at a good price. We might sign a safety and CB for depth if they are an upgrade over what we already have.

The draft is going be BPA all the way. Hopefully those BPAs are going to be someone in our target needs.

Honestly the way the line played down the stretch was far better than the beginning and with a good #2 WR they might survive another season. I believe we will resign Bell to a cap friendly contract.

Those that think Gettleman is going to focus on OT, WR, Safety or CB has not been listening to what Gettleman has been saying. BPA has been more of the focal point of his conversations than LT, WR or any other need. His only comments have been WR is a deep class again.
