avast, avg, norton all slow ur poo down.  use comodo, way easier on your resources. Do not use any of those pc cleaners or registry cleaners, they will fug your poo up.  the best way to speed up a computer is to replace your os hard drive with an SSD drive. your computer will boot in under 10 seconds and all your programs will load faster.  also, look to see what you have starting up by typing msconfig in your start, search bar. click on startup tab and uncheck anything you dont need to start when windows loads.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information. I've used all the programs I mentioned for almost 10 years now. They never slowed down my pc or fuged up my computer. You probably experienced a nasty virus that did that or faulty hardware and blaming the protection. Norton is the only one you mentioned that I hate. It's like a virus in itself.

I agree on the msconfig thing though.

My problems with Windows 7 never started until I didn't use it for a while, then downloaded a bunch of updates at once. Seems those updates were too much for my underpowered system to handle. Ran slow as tar afterwards. I finally made the jump to 8.1. After using it for a while, it isn't nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

I've spent 20 years plus fixing computers and have a BA in computer science.  I have had alot of experience with the different antiviruses.  Norton is the worst, then avast, AVG is lighter on resources but its just not that good of an antivirus client. Comodo and malware bytes work well too keep you computer clean. for cleaning viruses, best tool I have found was combofix.  I always recommend to save your data and do a factory restore for computers that are heavily infected.

This.

Norton is terrible. I had to remove it from a relative's computer once and it had trashed the registry so much I almost had to nuke the whole system in order to get it completely off.

MWBytes and hijackthis is what I always fall back to... as well as combofix

Still don't agree with you saying those programs I happened to mention slow down and mess up your computer. It's simply not true. Never had that problem in 10 plus years on multiple computers I've dealt with. That's the only thing I have a problem with. Everything else you mention I agree with.

If people do regular scans, it really doesn't matter what the name of the anti-virus is as long as it gets rid of viruses and doesn't slow down your PC like Norton. Just get a good one. Same with anti-malware programs. I like Malware bytes too, just prefer SAS.

Combo fix is a great tool. People just need to know what they're doing or they can mess up their computer.

I have no windows 7 experience but in window 8 you can try

1. Ctrl+alt+del

2. Task Manager

3. Startup tab

4. Disable anything that looks non essential

If you have bloatware do your best to remove it. A lot of novice PC users accidentally download programs they don't need like ask.com search bars and firefox addons that are basically ad-boards. I've seen guys we HP printer software taking up space when they dont own an HP printer.

Another thing I see a ton is people assuming their PC will last forever. Name brand factory assembled PCs tend to have cheaper parts in them and especially cheaper power supplies. They slow down after two years and become plain obsolete in 4.
