Hurney on Pats: Culture of Cheating

Goodell sucks at his job and I have now decided screw the cheating Patriots and go Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks. I don't want to see cheaters win. This thread has really got me thinking. I originally said that I wanted the Pats in another thread. Not anymore. I definitely don't want to see a cheating Bellicheat and Brady win this game. It's like rooting for Darth Vader.

I mean, the Panthers just didn't take steroids. They took life-threatening amounts that could have horribly effected their future. Far more harmful, if to no-one but themselves, than a taped practice.

Players that take it upon themselves to take PED's is shameful. It's not something I think any Panther fan is happy to discover and I haven't seen anyone applaud them via the "if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying" nonsense.

Having said that, none of it was sanctioned, approved, or promoted by the coaching staff. That's a huge distinction I thought even the most simple minds could understand but apparently, I'm wrong.

Which the Patriots were not found to have done.

Actually the entire NE video catalog was destroyed....by the NFL.....with no real documentation or explanation of what was on it.

I'm not saying NE taped and cheated on our game....but the NFL punished them and made sure the extend to what they did was never actually disclosed

Why destroy the evidence instead of confirming to the masses? It is reasonable to assume it was to protect the NFL product....bc no explanation of that really makes sense

quite a few people around here (I live near Boston) also talk of Brady supposedly having a separate frequency which could get communications from the coaches after the normal one was cut off.  Stories about it appear every once in a while.  but it is supposedly one of the things buried after Spygate.  Around here, a lot of people don't think that was to protect the Pats, but the NFL - the argument here is everyone was doing it and it was just the fans that didn't know, so if the evidence ever came to light, it would have disgraced the league and possibly destroyed much of the credibility of the major franchises.

Take it with a grain of salt since none of it is proven, but yeah.

Thanks for sharing. I hadn't heard that but in this day of advanced high tech,i suppose it would be easy to do.

It's not clear from what I've read if it was something that stopped after Spygate or not.  I'm doing some work but if people really care I can try to find some of the stories later.

Pats fans don't care.  Most of them think they just do what everyone does.  Maybe they're right?

mav1234,that would be neat to read some of those stories. Perhaps you can start a thread about them, after you look them up by doing some homework.

Ill just say, any coach and any offense has the ability to go to different signals.

If the team felt another team had their number,...duh the Cardinals in 2008--did they steal our plans? No. Any team can make in game adjustments.

More of a way to deflect stupidity instead of owning up.

We got mauled by the Seahawks in 2005. Any adjustments in that game?

Yes, by steve smith,.... the coaches and Jake,...not so much.

Get smarter,....football isnt one play or even one quarter or one half.

Make adjustments or dont. Spygate was dirty, but coaches that lost are cowards for leaning om that as the only reason they lost.

That's why I've said there's no combating people's feelings or innuendos. Some people just want to see it that way.

It was stupid to destroy the tapes, that move only fuels the rumors. Goodell is not a good decision maker.

I wonder if the backlash (people are still critical) will affect his decision this time?  He seemed quick to hire an outsider to investigate.

(for anyone who wants to refresh their memories)

You damn right he destroyed the evidence, can you imagine how much the image of the NFL would have suffered from a team cheating and winning super bowls from it. The situation was probably deeper then anyone know.

Yep.  I can't think of any leader throughout history that destroyed evidence to protect the innocent. He wanted nothing more than for the problem to go away because scandal tarnishes the shield.  Look at the Ray Rice situation.  Cover it up until it blows up.  It undoubtedly went deeper than what surfaced.  Goodell does not have to protect evidence, be fair or just, etc.  He works for 32 billionaires and his biggest job--he will tell anyone this--is to protect the shield.  Slapping Bb on the wrist was like putting a band aid on cancer.

I don't get how anyone could rationally assume that he burned the tapes and notes because there was nothing more to see.  That is when you DON;'T bury the evidence because it supports your decision.  Heck, Bb, who admitted to enough to give RG closure, could have sued the league after an appeal of the decision.  They would have had NO evidence to present in court,  The reason BB did not sue was because there was much more that would probably have given him a lifetime ban.  That would be the only reason he would sign an appeal waiver, a confession, and agree to the terms.

But it was apparently purposefully ignored.....
