Question about a game years ago

I don't know why, but this memory randomly popped into my head when I was reading about our Special Teams. This happened over a decade ago so I could just be making it up. It's kind of dead here right now anyway, so please help me clear this up.

I remember watching a game on TV when I was a kid, and a returner went back to receive a punt. One of the announcers was doing commentary and mentioned that this returner put icy hot in his jock strap so it would piss him off because he played better pissed off.

Now to me, that sounds like Smitty (classic Smitty), but I don't remember who they were talking about or if it was even a guy on our team. I do remember it being a Panther game though...

So yeah... Am I just imagining things or does anyone else remember this?

This was said about Smitty in his rookie season by Rosinski. It was Tiger Balm intead of Icy Hot.

I KNEW IT!

Thank you for validating what I've been randomly remembering for the past 13 or 14 years. I didn't think it was Icy Hot exactly but I knew it was something he put on his junk to piss him off.

Next returner we get needs to lube up with some Tiger Balm before each game. it breeds viciousness and sick return skills.

Who remembers when Dwight Stone got knocked the fug out so hard on a return that when he got up, his eyes were moving side to side in his head and he fell back down again?

Broncos game in Denver, 1997. Darrien Gordon returned two punts for TDs that game as well.

    • And really, it should be 4 reasons with the last one being that there were ZERO other offensive weapons on that team in 2024, opposing defenses only had to worry about one player all year long and they constantly double and triple teamed him right off the snap all season.  In 2023, we still had Jacob Cowing who had 90 catches that year and was drafted by the 49ers last year, so teams couldn't just send everyone after T-Mac on every passing down.
    • I wonder if the Hornets view Kon and McNeeley more as forwards and plan to ship off Green/Okogie/Smith for center help. I hope they don’t plan to ship off Sexton as I like what he brings to the team. (2) G - Ball, Mann, Simpson (two-way) (3) G - Sexton, Dinwiddie, Connaughton (3) F - Miller, Knueppel, McNeeley, James (two-way) (3) F - Bridges, Williams, Salaun (3) C - Diabate, Kalkbrenner, Plumlee
    • 3 main reasons he was better in 2023 and none of them concern me for his NFL prospects 1. Totally new coaching staff that was a massive downgrade and had god awful play calling and designs, the entire fan base was ready to run the coaching staff out of town a month into their first season and the play caller ended up getting changed because it was so bad. 2. Along with the staff downgrade, his QB played significantly worse after being the Pac 12 Freshman of the Year in 2023.  Constantly missed T-Mac when he was wide open, lost out on a number of TDs and a good amount of yardage, half the time T-Mac still almost made miraculous catches on the bad passes too. 3. He hurt his ankle over the summer and missed all of fall camp only to return to practice a few days before the season started and I think he had to deal with it all season long and was slightly limping at times mid season too, but kept fighting through it to still be a 1st team All American.
