SI.COM redrafts first round - 4 panther rookies selected

This is how you keep a competitive team on the field year in and year out. Draft high value players late in rounds who are talented enough to make an immediate impact, get the most of their services for a few years before turning around and trading them for more draft picks. This is how the pats have been successful for 10+ years now. They have one of the smartest GM's and one of the smartest front offices in the league.

As like as Gettleman and his scouting staff can keep landing gems like these in the draft, the Panthers have a chance to be competitive for the next decade or so.

No more 4-12, 5-11 seasons ... I think the Panthers will be an 8-8 team or better from here on out.

Building the scouting department to the level it's at now was one of Hurney's best accomplishments. For all the bad that he did while he was here, that's one of the things he got very right.

The only Panther that I disagreed with was Ealy. I'd say he lived up to his expectations as a 2nd round pick but didn't do enough to show that he is a 1st round pick. If they did all seven rounds I think Norwell and Turner could have been in the 2nd round and Philly could have been like a 4th rounder. Overall it was a great draft and if you're looking at performance and potential together Benjamin should be in or at least closer to the top 10.

Extremely impressive. I didn't like the Hardy rental, and felt we could have been more aggressive addressing the tackle position, but I love everything else Dave has done and is doing.

And hat's off to the whole organization when it comes to scouting and player selection.

Now if we could just trust the coaches to play the right guys before they are backed into a corner...

Consistent drafting is how you...

- insulate against free agent losses

- avoid having to overpay players in contract years

- stay consistent

- keep control of your salary cap

- build a perennial contender

If we keep drafting well, all options are open.

like many things we may not fully appreciate DG until year 5, that would give him 5 draft classes and 1 year out from under the Hurney contracts.
