Insider: Panthers have a leader and franchise QB in Cam Newton

Before the beginning of last season, the mods on the Falcons forum went about banning everyone who critiqued Matt Ryan. They were labelled as trolls by the "fans". Well as the season went on, those that were left on there could not hold themselves back when Ryan was throwing pick sixes.

No one here hates Cam Newton. Most of us watch other NFL games and see other QBs play. Wanting Cam to improve on certain bad aspects of his game does not mean you hate him.

And unless something radical happens, he will be a 28 year old QB with lots of mileage who still needs to run to be really effective...

Oh stop it already. He has proven he can be pretty effective from the pocket alone. In our second game against DET, he was not running and completed 65% of his passes with no INT for a rating of 100.2. His ratings dropped when he started running again.

<p>Criticism of Cam is fair. He had a poor year. Cam is far from a sure thing and he isn't even the closest the Panthers have had. There were years where Delhomme and Beuerlein were much more dependable than Cam has ever been.&nbsp; And to be honest even those guys weren't that great.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>This franchise has never really seen what a true franchise QB is. Cam is young and maybe one day he'll get there but his play is inconsistent and the last two years in the divisional round he hasn't impressed much.</p>

You can tell a lot about a product by how they advertise it to you. For example, if I see a hotel that is advertising 'clean rooms' that tells me there's enough evidence to suggest the rooms may not be clean that the hotel feels the need to reassure you that they are.

Similarly when I see all this stuff put out trying to build up Cam as a franchise QB it tells me they're trying to sell it because they know there are doubts.

I think the main reason they did it was the message that came out of both DG and RR's press conferences; where they were asking him to be more consistent. They wanted to calm the nerves of the "true" fans.

You want point of view. Over the past 4 years Cam has not improved his footwork or mechanics which have effected his accuracy. He is getting worse every year and oh yeah he is getting injured more. He is starting to look like Michael Vick 2.0 on the field and is not worth top 10 QB pay. I have stated before I wouldnt mind signing Cam but nothing over 19 million a year but I wouldnt want it more than 4 years.

Players do what coaches ask them to. Think he's been asked to work on these things? Doubt it. So far, our staff has been content with using his natural ability over honing any skill. Using his natural ability is lazy and pretty much what I would expect from the people in charge of our offense. Players play. Coaches coach.

Well to be fair there is a difference between offering an opinion and just being controversial to be controversial. Not really sure you could consider it censoring if it isn't much of an "opinion" to begin with. To be considered an "opinion" it would have to be at least somewhat logical.

I see you as a troll. It's like you have a Cam alarm, anytime someone criticizes Cam, you magically show up. You don't offer much but empty quips.

I wouldn't agree with that. The Red doesn't waste time trying posting a long logical point of view to someone who is simply being inflammatory because it's a waste of time. A silly quip gets a terse response. Nothing more than that, at least that's how I see it.

I am talking from my interaction with him. I have mostly ignored him because of that.

A top 10 QB based on what? QBR? Completion percentages? Exactly what criteria do you include and exclude to decide who's a top 10 QB? Any fair assessment would include QB rushing stats, especially rushing TD's and first downs right?

Well, if I were Bus Cook, I would certainly pray the Panthers don't base their negotiating position based on Newton's completion percentage or NFL passer rating...and I am sure Mr. Cook won't be the first to mention those numbers.

There is no doubt that of all the available QB metrics available, Total QBR is the most favorable to the running types.

While I disagree with the weight some stats are given in Total QBR, especially when determining the long term value of a player, let's look at Newton's total QBR numbers throughout his career:

2011: 15th

2012: 14th

2013: 13th

2014: 16th

I can't argue with Newton's consistency in regard these rankings...I think he should be offered a contract in line with these numbers. He is simply not a top 10 QB. He is middle of the pack...if he stays healthy...

Kap isnt more efficient in the sense that his offense is super simplified where he really only makes one-read. Not to mention he has wayyyy more talent around him. You say Cam has to run to be effective, which may be true but if he didnt put the team on is back in those situations its hard to see us winning many games. Thats not a knock on cam as it is a refelction of the talent around him.

But if we keep tagging Newton, those are ALL guaranteed, so we wouldnt be doing ourselves a favor doing that. He would get something like 3yrs/ $53 million. thats not exactly what you want.

Keep hating on him though, maybe one day you'll be right.

No one knows what the franchise tag will be in 2016, but obviously should Newton suddenly become a top 10 QB, you would not be overpaying by much, simply because of the way the franchise number is constructed.

The reality is that the Panthers won't continue to tag him, it is simply leverage they have over him in potential negotiations.

No one knows but we have a pretty good idea. its not like the top 5 QBs are all suddenly going to get $50 million next year.

But you'd rather have newton take up ~$18 mil a year for 3 years on the cap than have an escalating cap number for the next 3 years?
