Any thoughts on Jamison Crowder from Duke?

Too short for my taste, plus I don't see him as a punt returner.

It was stated by all the CBs he was the hardest guy to cover, so poo on my opinion. Scouts calling him a brandon cooks clone. Hype train is here, but I'm not on it.

I'm waiting to see how fast he is and how big his hands are before I form a opinion. .

I know people throw around the Smith-like tag anytime an undersized WR with speed is available, but I truly believe Crowder fits the Smitty-esque bill.  His size and speed are the easy giveaways, but his ability to fight for the ball, his vertical, and strength to play much bigger than his size, is what I like about Crowder.  If he's available still with one of our compensatory picks, I'd snag him.  I don't want him as our future #2, but an additional WR that could evolve into a nasty slot receiver with return abilities would be okay.

CBS:

"At Duke [Pro Day], wideout Jamison Crowder shaved more than a tenth of a second off of his disappointing 4.57 time at the Combine in the 40-yard dash and caught the ball well during his positional workout.

It isn't surprising that the dynamic slot receiver and return specialist looked quicker Wednesday, as he dropped nine pounds from the Combine, coming in at 5-foot-8 (3/4) and 176 pounds. Besides the improved 40-yard dash times (he was clocked at 4.44 and 4.46 according to scout on hand), Crowder also registered a 4.25-second short shuttle, a 7.0 second time in the 3 cone and a 10-3" broad jump - all improvements upon the numbers he posted in Indianapolis."

I hate the Smitty comparisons, the guy has calves the size of freaking beach balls. Smitty's strength is what sets him apart from so many of these other 6 foot and under guys. But I get that you were making the comparison about playing stronger than his size indicates.

For a guy Crowder's size I would've liked to have seen a 3 cone time significantly below 7 seconds.

from ChiefsDigest.com:

Mike Mayock on how Tyler Lockett’s 4.40 40-yard dash time at the Combine set him apart from Crowder (who ran a 4.56 at the Combine):

“I thought what [Lockett’s 4.40] did was differentiate himself from slot receivers,” Mayock said on Feb. 21. “If you’re going to put him in there with Jamison Crowder from Duke – and I had him slotted him in there together – I knew off tape that Crowder was going to be quicker than fast and I thought Lockett was going to run fast. And that’s what happened today. Crowder was like 4.56, plus or minus, so Crowder is kind of a slot receiver with great return skills. Lockett, by virtue of running 4.40 and being a little bigger, is [not only] a slot, he’s [also an] outside [receiver], he’s a return guy. He helped himself because he ran 4.40, no doubt about it."

and like with Crowder:

"arguably the largest area causing apprehension with analysts

surrounds Lockett’s 5-10, 182-pound frame [Crowder was 5-08, 185 at Combine, and even lighter at his Pro Day today]

“Lacks the size and strength to mix it up with NFL defenders,” Shonka said. “Can be thrown around at the line of scrimmage by a quality press corner. Can be overshadowed in traffic. Won’t out-physical anyone in traffic. Lacks presence as a blocker.”

Rang echoed Shonka’s opinion.

“In terms of running the route tree and things of that nature, I think Tyler Lockett can do that,” Rang said. “It’s a question can he do it with a 6-1, 200-pound NFL corner, whom he will be engaged with the entire time.”

...

Count former K-State cornerback Randall Evans as another person who doesn’t agree with the size argument when it comes to his teammate.

The 6-0, 190-pound Evans said in a telephone interview he locked up numerous times at the line of scrimmage against Lockett during practices since both arrived on campus in 2011. And those experiences provided a challenge for Evans, who is also preparing for the NFL Draft.

“When you cover Tyler Lockett, you just have to make sure to be ready to run,” Evans said. “You have to be ready to make sure you can stick with his speed. ... Lockett is one of the fastest and quickest guys I have stuck in my whole career out of any other schools I’ve played. Knocking his size, it’s not all about his size. I’d rather stick a bigger receiver than Tyler Lockett at the end of the day, because I can easily stick with a big receiver.”

I'm not saying Crowder is like Smitty, but I've recently been seeing a variety of posters dismissing a variety of great prospects recently because they are "too small." Smitty was small in college too (and he basically redshirted his whole rookie season in the NFL getting bigger). Like Smitty got bigger, these small prospects will too
