David Newton answers mailbag questions

You guys saying "opportunity to start and have playing time" etc. do realize that the Vikings may have as little WR skill as we do, right? Their #1 is a guy who was on the Browns practice squad week 1 this past year. Johnson has definitely shown out but is still a bottom 10 #1 WR in this league and they have nothing else. Jennings is no better than Cotch, Patterson sucks and I have no idea who else they have.

Would you rather have to beat out Greg Jennings, Patterson, CJ (who is actually quite good), and a sneaky good Jarius wright

or

Brenten Bersin and Jericho Cotchery?

Lol, c'mon man.

The best shot he'd have at playing time between the Panthers and Vikings would be as the #3 in Minnesota. Patterson is not in the conversation and Wright is worse than Philly. Johnson is their #1 and Jennings is their #2 but he could easily walk in as their #3 if he's good enough (if he's not it wouldn't matter anyways because he couldn't play anywhere if he couldn't make it as their #3). Cotch and Jennings will both be done soon anyways so he'd be looking at Vikings #2 or Panthers #3 once those guys are done in a year or two (not retired but very likely not on the same teams as now).  And I'd say KB is more solidly set as #1 than Johnson. Johnson could easily not be Minnesota's #1 in a year or two. KB will be here as #1 (unless we draft someone who's outrageously good and becomes a #1, in which case KB would be our #2) for at least 4 more years. If he's purely looking for opportunity, Carolina is no better than Minnesota, and there are other teams in the league who's WRs are as bad as ours or worse.

David Newton does a great job with glossy, obvious, surface level reporting that a casual fan would understand, which is what I'd expect from ESPN.  Bill Voth does a great job doing a more in depth analysis for the hardcore fans.  I don't consider Joe Person a reporter.

lol  Completely agree. Shame Steve Reed doesn't cover the Panthers on a full time basis anymore, he did a very nice job.

The guy sent a couple of tweets, it's not the end of the world. Basically, you're saying it's a transparent argument to say that about signing with Minnesota. Most fans give opinions for selfish reasons....if we were selfless and completely honest, we would tweet for him sign with Minnesota because they need as much WR help as the Panthers but that doesn't help us very much.

Fandom is all emotion, very little smarts. The problem isn't this one tweeter. It's all the people outside Minnesota saying the same thing like he doesn't know it, which probably makes Minnesota look even better to him. The tweets that he actually responds to are telling.

I was only talking about our Huddler. I'm not on Twitter so you may have totally valid points. If it's not a tweet embedded and posted on the huddle, I have no idea so I'm sure you have a much better grasp on what being sent to the kid.

Yeah. So far he's responded to Colts, browns, and Vikings tweets. Nothing about the Panthers... Who knows if that means anything though.

Doesn't matter. Lecturing him about being in his father's shadow like he doesn't know who his father is and where he played, is stupid and incendiary. Had his father flamed out in Minnesota and ended up despised by the fans there, you'd also be telling him he shouldn't go there for that reason, so people can see right through you, but you can't see yourselves.

Lecturing?  LOL.

A tweet only allows 140 words, and personally I think that a continuation tweet---if you get what I'm saying---is kinda lame and defeats the purpose.  I view a tweet as a tool.  I see a tweet as a keyhole to information and/or imagination.  Because of a tweets limitations, it is almost like a work of art, as you're trying to maximize & minimize simultaneously. It's not like my aforementioned tweet is a peek inside Pandora's Box, it is more of sending Carter a vision in which to motivate and inspire him to come and play for the Panthers.

If you look at his heading and tagline (for lack of a better term), it is obvious that he identifies with his father, desires to be great, and wants to fulfill his destiny as a football player.  I am just providing him another view is all.  Like it or not, he is always going to be his father's son, and the reality is is that he's going to have to deal with that.  This is going to be even more the case in Minny.  That's just the reality.  I am sure that deep down inside Carter wants to be his own man, make his own way.

Sure he has other options, but none of the other options include playing with Cam and KB.  This is OUR trump card, and a tweet here or there to help sway him this way is not a bad thing in my opinion.

All in all, it's not that serious.  He doesn't have to be paying any attention whatsoever, but if he is and feels some type of way about it, then he could ignore or block me. I believe he is listening.

Edit: And if you really want to know the truth about his tweets, if you notice he has gone pretty much silent for more than a week. That's probably by design.
