David Newton answers mailbag questions

Mr. Scot

I like Newton. He does a good job for the most part and when he does say something that we may not like at least he has a valid point.

Carter is gonna sign here. Proehl made an impression on him. Here has an opportunity to start. I don't get the love for Minnesota. There really isn't anyone from the old man's days and they already let him walk out the door once. Many say he is a legitimate prospect.

You guys saying "opportunity to start and have playing time" etc. do realize that the Vikings may have as little WR skill as we do, right? Their #1 is a guy who was on the Browns practice squad week 1 this past year. Johnson has definitely shown out but is still a bottom 10 #1 WR in this league and they have nothing else. Jennings is no better than Cotch, Patterson sucks and I have no idea who else they have.

Yasinskas was okay when he was with the Observer, but once he got the ESPN gig covering the entire NFC South he got lazy about covering anybody but his old team (Tampa).

That's how we ended up with stuff like Yas continually insisting that Brandon Beane was in contention for the GM job (in reality he was never even considered) and his saying that Gettleman had never worked as a college scout (all you had to do was read his bio to know that was wrong).

ESPN did the right thing when they assigned individual reporters to every team and gave Yasinskas the Bucs.  And while Newton - whose background is primarily in NASCAR coverage - doesn't always demonstrate good football knowledge, he actually does try and do a good job covering the Panthers, and I appreciate that.

David Newton does a great job with glossy, obvious, surface level reporting that a casual fan would understand, which is what I'd expect from ESPN.  Bill Voth does a great job doing a more in depth analysis for the hardcore fans.  I don't consider Joe Person a reporter.

Doesn't matter. Lecturing him about being in his father's shadow like he doesn't know who his father is and where he played, is stupid and incendiary. Had his father flamed out in Minnesota and ended up despised by the fans there, you'd also be telling him he shouldn't go there for that reason, so people can see right through you, but you can't see yourselves.

The guy sent a couple of tweets, it's not the end of the world. Basically, you're saying it's a transparent argument to say that about signing with Minnesota. Most fans give opinions for selfish reasons....if we were selfless and completely honest, we would tweet for him sign with Minnesota because they need as much WR help as the Panthers but that doesn't help us very much.

I went from indifference to seriously hoping we sign Carter.

Looking at the CFL highlights, he looks like a completely different player from college. Whatever it takes to get him in here, do it. He originally was just looking for a 100k signing bonus. I'm sure the demand has driven that up a bit, but I can't see him getting more than 500k, and I would pay that to him in a heartbeat to secure his services. It still is super low-risk, high-reward potential.
