Trade talk

Why would we trade our Kalil and draft a kid to replace him??? He is a high character guy, the leader and glue of our Oline and still a solid player. Trading a proven player for a pick that is unproven gets suggested here way too much.

They're talking about trading FOR Matt Kalil, OT for the Vikings.

Problem with matt kalil is three things- money, contract, and is he any good? Hes in the last year of his contract that pays 5+ million, that's too much if you are backup/bell level.

So if you trade for him, you also in turn need to sign a new deal otherwise its pointless. Even for a 7th, if he sucks its a waste. The tape showing he sucks, but the book is not over.

Kalil at one point during the season was the only starting OT that graded out worse than Bell. He's also on the last year of his rookie contract so it would essentially be a one year rental and then he's a free agent. And you want to give up a SECOND round pick for this guy?

The Vikings FO would fall over laughing if they somehow managed to get a 2nd for him. I'd maybe throw a 6th or 7th just to take a flier on him and see if he can turn his career around here (and if he does have a big year we'd have to worry about re-signing him).

Since we're talking Kalil, what would be his trade value? When was the last time anyone traded a center? If there was any value to him, I could be convinced to be for it, and we could draft Cameron Erving to replace Kalil.

While I am all for drafting a center to one day replace Kalil. There is no way we let Kalil go anytime soon. His leadership on that line is critical. In 2015 he will have two sophomores and a RT that has his first starting gig in his career, plus he will (hopefully) have a new LT. You have to have someone that controls that group. We have one of the best in the business. No way we replace him in 2015.

I doubt Minnesota would let Kalil go but I think working with his brother might help and would be worth a low round pick to bring him in.
