The fire was caused by a 10 year old modular fireplace that had a crack in it. It was sitting on the wood floor ,instead of a supporting base.This missing base plate factor was a violation of the building code. The homes builder said  the house passed inspection before it was sold years ago. Kind of makes one wonder how through these inspections really are.

Yes,If i'm not mistaken it was a $1.5 million house. I though i saw that figure in the Charlotte Observers earlier story about the fire but i later researched and couldn't find the article.
