Should Rivera's new nickname be The Teflon Ron?

For those not familiar with the term, back in the 1990s "real life" Godfather and Mafia crime boss John Gotti's was given the nickname "The Teflon Don." The reason being is because no matter what the prosecutor and state of NY tried to throw at him to lock him up, nothing would stick. He would always go free on some kind of technicality and never go to prison despite all the evidence clearly stacked against him, until ofcourse it finally caught up with him and he did end up going to prison.

So why the term "Teflon don"? Simple really, nothing ever sticks to Teflon, and since no charges ever stuck to John Gotti despite overwhelming evidence, this is how he became The Teflon Don.

What on earth does any of this have to do with Rivera? Well much like John Gotti, there is a ton of evidence supporting why Rivera is just not a good coach. His complete lack of going for it on 4th down when it clearly worked before, mediocre veteran players being injured before better and faster rookies finally got the nod, the constant play not to lose mentality, the complete unwillingness to shake up his coaching staff despite piss poor performances on both special teams and offense, the list goes on really.

So despite all this evidence, why is he still around? Why have none of this overwhelming evidence I listed above, stick? Because of technicalities. The "But we made the playoffs despite a losing record" technicality or the "But his December record is so good" technicality, or the "his players play hard for him" technicality. You get the point.

This is where John Gotti and Ron Rivera have so much in common, make no mistake, I am in no way, shape or form saying Rivera is a sociopathic crime lord, I'm simply stating that both men, despite having overwhelming evidence stacked against them defied the odds and still survived, that is ofcourse until they don't. Hence, The Teflon Ron.

Oh god, where to start with you....

 

1. His complete lack of going for it on 4th down.

 

Did you miss the entire second half of last season? I believe he goes for it on 4th down more than any other coach.

 

 

2. Mediocre veteran players being injured before better and faster rookies finally get the nod

 

Rookies take time to learn the game. Bene was a star from training camp but was injured early. It's not rocket science.

 

 

3. His constant play not to lose mentality

 

He has been too conservative, but I believe he has adjusted well since this realization after the Bills game last year. I believe he's right where he should be on conservative/aggressiveness. It's always the same deal, if he goes for it and messes up, your type complains he should have been conservative. Meanwhile he'll have a conservative play that doesn't pan out and you complain he didn't go for it. Of course you know the right decision in hindsight.

 

4.His unwillingness to shake up the coaches

 

I'm actually not as against Shula as the masses. We OWNED time of possesion this season. I think with a better line and a RB playing well, along with additional weapons, we may have a decent offense. Shula has stunk at times but I believe he's improved. I'd like to see improvement in the red zone though. I don't agree with keeping Rogers, but the claim was that we had a ton of injuries. We'll see how it pans out.

 

What it boils down to is that Rivera was a first time coach so people who actually understand football give him some time to adjust. This year and last was cap hell and we were forced to shop for no name players. This year didn't pan out as well as last and we started the season with a pretty terrible starting roster. Once the rookies (thank you Gettlemen) were up to speed they took over and we have the team we have now. You should be excited going forward. i think we are going to rule the NFC south for a long, long time. My bet is on us going 11-5 next year.

I think people are under the delusion that excellent coaches grow on trees and if we just fired our current guy we'd find the next Belicheck. The reality is you're more likely to take a step back than anything else.

The odds of getting a superstar are small so most of the time you're hoping for 'good enough'.

I don't see any evidence. All I see is someone making an emotionally driven rant without logically thinking through the big picture.
