BJ Kinney Scouting

2011: (13/13) Started first game at ROG and the next 12 at OC 2012: (13/13) OC 2013: (13/13) - OC

Possesses prototypical height for the position but arms slightly on the shorter side (31 3/8 inches). Well-proportioned frame with thick upper body and good overall bulk. Smooth muscle tone and a bit soft in mid-section. He has thick thighs with leaner calves and average hand size (9 5/8 inches). Estimated top-end speed is up to par for a center prospect.     Has shown outstanding durability and has started in all 39 career games throughout his first three seasons.     Former walk on. Will be a two-time team captain as a junior and senior. Even-keeled and easy-going individual. Accountable both on and off the field. Has developed into one the leaders of the team and isn't afraid to speak up. Son of Christy Finney and the late J Finney, who passed away in 2004. He has three siblings (Vallen, Tiffany and Nicole).

Offensive Center Specific Traits
Snaps and sets quickly. Average flexibility and lateral quickness. Really like his overall technique and balance, as he's rarely overextended and shows good patience in sets. Lacks heavy and jarring punch, but has active hands and is constantly working to gain inside positioning. Above-average shuffle and mirror capabilities when able to latch with hands. Adequate anchor and shows ability to sink hips and regain leverage when initially rocked back by power moves.     Adequate first step quickness and takes proper angles to gain quality initial positioning. Doesn't have an overwhelming inline power base and but enters contact with proper leverage. Good overall balance and keeps feet moving to sustain blocks. Shows adequate timing coming off combo blocks. However, below-average athlete in space and will need to constantly rely on taking quality angles to cut off linebackers at the second level.     Seasoned player that displays natural instincts for the position. Assignment sound in the run game and quickly identifies and locates targets at the second level. Above-average awareness and recognition for defensive line stunts and pressures from the second and third level.     Shows good fight at the point of attack. Does what he has to do and works to sustain blocks. Won't back down. However, lacks an edge and killer's mentality. Not a consistent finisher at this point. Would like to see more of nasty side from him.

Doesn't sound like a bad prospect. Possible round 3-4 guy and backup to Kalil.

2011: (11/1) - 5-0-0 2012: (14/14)53-5-4 2013: (13/13)- 57-8-0 Career PR's: 14-65-4.6-0     Has prototypical height with a somewhat slender frame. Needs to continue to get bigger and stronger. His top-end speed on tape looks adequate. Arm length (31') and hand-span (8 ¾') are both below average for his position.     Can improve bulk but has been durable so far. Has started all 27 games the past two seasons.     A team player that is developing into a leader. Responds well to coaching but has average work ethic. Does what is required in the weight room but needs to become more commited in that area. Comes from a supportive two-parent home and has no off-the-field issues. Majors in communication studies.

Cornerback Specific Traits

Has a good football intelligence. Is a naturally instinctive player who quickly diagnoses route combinations. Has good instincts in zone coverage but could be more aggressive at time. Also does an effective job in the zone of protecting himself vertically.     Has a tendency to get too high in his pedal and will occasionally lose balance when the WR initiates contact, or when he is redirecting out of his pedal. Is more quick than fast. Is at his best in the zone, where he can keep the play in front of him and use his reaction skills. Has some tightness in his hips. Has adequate speed but gives up some separation when turning to run vertically and lacks catch up speed to make up ground when the ball is in the air. Is also inconsistent with the press-man technique. Needs to be more physical and improve upper body strenght to re-route bigger WRs.     Has good hand-eye coordination. Has above-average length and appears on tape to have good leaping ability. Made a difficult one-handed INT vs. Tennessee (off of a deflection) in 2012, but his production dipped from from that season (4 INTs) to last year's (0 INTs).     Is willing in support. Shows adequate toughness but is also not going to mix it up if it's unnecessary. Gets pushed around by bigger/stronger WRs and frequently struggles to get off of blocks. Has an adequate tackling technique but fails to wrap on occasion and will fall off some tackles, but did show great effort chasing down S. Carolina RB Mike Davis on the final play of the third quarter in 2013. Breaks down in space and looks to wrap up when in position. Doesn't have a lot of pop but does a better-than-average job as an open-field tackler.

Day 3 pick, rounds 5-7 maybe.
