Rivera did say "There will be no personnel changes" the day before he cut Godfrey, so him talking up Shula isn't necessarily a sign he'll stay, but I'm trying very very hard to keep my hopes quite low.

The reason Shula was "better" was because they let Cam control the offense on nearly 100% of scoring drives.

Where have you been for the past 2 years. Shula lets Cam audiblize and calls plays based on what he sees at the line of scrimmage. He has done that all along. As Cam continues to learn and grow so will the offense. That is his philosophy and what he has emphasized. As Cam got healthy so did the offense.

And Chud got promptly fired after 1 year. What if Shula had more to do with our success than Chud given Cam kept improving and Cleveland never developed a QB under Chud. Maybe Chud's attitude about being so great and smart bit him in the ass when his offense and team never materialized.

Shula can make things work with the proper personnel. Hes not going anywhere and I like it.

Seattle is successful because they adapt and are flexible. Not to mention a better defense and run game, requirements for ball control.

Ball control works if you break down the game and use it smartly when it needs to be used, and don't use it when it doesn't- in other words still being able to change, adapt and stay competitive even when things aren't going your way controlling TOP.

Shula views the entire game, before it starts as one big time clock. The entire game is about controlling possession from the first play to the last. There is absolutely no room for adapting and being flexible. If our run game lacks we are screwed, if we are down by any points by the fourth quarter, we lose. If we don't have half a quarter to score we lose.

A classic Shula game is getting down in points and seeing the herp derp plays called all of a sudden because Shula has no CLUE how to adapt and catch up when he isn't ahead and controlling the clock.You can easily go back and watch games and know exactly when Shula is starting to panic and call these plays, it's incredibly obvious.

Above all, we have Cam Newton and are trying to run this garbage. It seems so very stupid to put Cam in that kind of play calling. Seattle's Wilson is almost built for it but nothing about Cam is in my opinion.

Another long diatribe with no evidence to back it up. If we were all about ball control then we would have come out running every game and would have run more than we threw. We actually threw almost 75 times more than we ran.

If we were down in the fourth quarter then Cam would have never brought us back yet he did this year and last on numerous occasions. (It isn't the offense's fault if we can't keep a lead).

If what you said is true we would have been terrible in the hurry up and the 2 minute offense. Yet that was not the case and we had a number of quick scoring drives and Cam looked best in the hurry up offense.

I can Think of several teams with incredibly poor quarterbacks who might jump at the chance that Shula could do for their quarterback what he did for Newton. Off the top of my head teams like Jacksonville, the Jets, Buffalo etc have quarterbacks who have never blossomed like Cam did. They would be smart to get someone like Shula to help develop their team.

They go hand in hand. Say what you want but Cam is light years ahead of Kaepernick in terms of understanding defenses. And he knows how to scan the field and find the open guy. Once we get the players we need to run this offense we will have one of the most efficient like we did in 2013.

Honestly, Shula needs to swallow his damn pride and set up some time with Gus Malzahn in the offseason.  Its obvious that Shula WANTS to at times use Cam's unique athletic gifts and skills, but its also obvious that he doesn't have a single clue as to how to accomplish that.

 

Answer:  Talk to the man who has those clues.

 

Now that doesn't mean I think Shula should throw out his playbook and completely replace it with Malzahn's.  But at the very least he could better understand the concepts of the read-option, HOW to use it, WHEN to use it, utilization of the jet-sweep, the WR route-tree out of the Malzahn concepts, the utility of going no-huddle with a QB like Cam, and better implement those concepts into Carolina's playbook.

 

Do I think Shula will?  Or that he would even think of doing such a thing?

Unfortunately, no.  Maybe if hell froze over.

Not surprised, but a shame that we are willing to accept that kind of inepitude with so many jobs riding on it.

Shula's archaic crawlball offense simply isnt cut out for today's NFL. His "clock control" offense just doesnt work anymore.

There are too many moving parts that have to be perfect all drive for it to yield 7 and defenses are too aggressive.

It's done, but we're still desperatley trying to lead the league in T.O.P. rather than points scored or wins.
