Richard Sherman talks about Cam Newton

From the Observer's "Inside the Panthers" section (link)

After the Seahawks' 31-17 win Saturday, Sherman crowed a bit to NFL Network, saying he should have had two or three picks. He also brought up Newton's comments.

"I didn't think he'd throw that go ball, but obviously he decided to make that decision," Sherman told the network. "I heard earlier in the week he was going to try me. He didn't care what side he threw it to, and you've got to make him pay for those bad decisions."

The pick by Sherman proved to be the least costly of Newton's three turnovers. It was basically a punt and led to no Seattle points.

Anytime you're reading comments from Sherman, you have to separate what's actual analysis from what's just his ego talking.  I'd say his comments here fall under the latter, with the 'bad decision' in this case being the one to throw to his side of the field.

You can watch the whole interview here.

Other excerpts...

There was confusion during and after the game about how defensive end Michael Bennett came through the left side of the line unblocked to disrupt the play. Newton indicated the crowd noise prevented all the linemen from getting the call.

"That was a read play. I don't think it was blocked right, but that's what happens when you play in a hostile environment," Newton said. "A lot of people heard one thing, and others heard something else."

Newton's worst giveaway was his last one: Kam Chancellor's pick-six in the fourth quarter that sealed it for the Seahawks.

That play was designed to go away from Sherman's side. But first-year receiver Brenton Bersin, the first read, slipped in his route.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Newton was a little late coming back to the right side, allowing Chancellor to break in front of tight end Ed Dickson and deliver the dagger.

"The difference was just missed opportunities," Newton said. "I did a bad job of protecting the football, and when you're playing a great defense you just have to take what they give you."

Ron Rivera said no one was supposed to block the defensive end and the mixup was between Cam and Stewart. If you watch the play and see what happened it's fascinating. It's possible Cam made a change at the line of scrimmage for Bell to block the end because the Panthers had numbers to the right side. However the play was not designed that way and we can speculate Bell didn't hear any adjustment that may have occurred

The first interception was not a big deal to me. It was a low risk, high reward play. Cam was kind of throwing on the run and late and it happened but it wasn't any worse than a punt. I saw Sherman's interview live and he was not derogatory of Cam. He was talking in a calm "cheeky" tone. Sure his line was self serving but not really mean spirited.

To be fair, when is Sherman not self-serving?

Love him or hate him, it's hard to deny the dude thinks an awful lot of himself.

So not only are Bell's feet filled with sand but he is also deaf.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
