Offseason NFL News

Mr. Scot

So after previously stating he wanted to retire after this season, Steve Smith now says he'll be back next year.

Anyone surprised?

He had said that he intended to play one more year in Carolina and then retire, but after he was cut he said he would play two more years.  So no surprise here.

We finished next to last in KO return yardage allowed in spite of the fact that Gano boots the ball through the endzone like 4 out of every 5 kicks.

How is there even any question we need a new ST coach

ST coach/overhaul should be right up there with finding a LT and WR for the Panthers off season.

Definitely no surprise.  But I think part of he reason he now wants to play longer is to try and stick it to the Panthers.  Given that we got just as far as he did in the playoffs - and did so without his help - I'd say he sees that mission as not yet accomplished.

Let's say McD gets the NYJ job - who would we target? One of these guys? Aren't Frazier and RR buddies?

Frazier and Rivera were teammates in Chicago.

My honest read is that if McDermott goes, Steve Wilks gets the DC job.  I could see Frazier backfilling as the DB coach.  I'll grant it's possible that Frazier gets the DC gig and Wilks stays where he is, though.

I honestly don't think we're gonna lose McDermott though.

I'm not a big fan of hiring within. I think it delutes your coaching pool and does not allow new way of thought. Case and point is Shula. Loved him as a QB coach and thought Cam was progressing well. Now Cam has lost that because of internal hiring.

For what it's worth, the way we all feel about Shula is how 49ers fans talk about Greg Roman, so I believe he and Rex will flame out in Buffalo. Rex shoulda gone to ATL. Glad he didn't though.

I'd agree.

Wilks was actually said to be Rivera's first choice for the DC job but the Chargers refused permission at the time.  McDermott was unexpectedly fired shortly thereafter and became the guy.  Wilks joined us the following year after his contract with the Chargers ran out, but as DB coach replacing Ron Meeks (who I think Rivera only kept as a placeholder anyway).

Jets hire Texans’ director of college scouting Mike Maccagnan as their GM.

McDermott interviews for their head coaching job tomorrow.

After thinking on it, he seems like a Jets type of headcoach, DC defensive first approach, I think the key would be who he brings on as OC.

Maybe Shula???? Well one can wish can't I.
