Another FA thread... but this one has lists and links

It's not just Bell. He's an extremely low score but look at Bulaga. They have him rated very highly but he was a disappointment in Green Bay. They gave the Left Tackle spot to a 4th round pick. I would imagine his score gets a bump for being in a good offense with a QB that can beat the pass rush with quick passes.

They have Jason Avant rated above Hakeem Nicks and Reggie Wayne. Maybe Nicks and Wayne didn't have great seasons but we know Avant didn't.

It's a metric but a shallow metric. They don't know the play calls and don't consider the health of players. I like the list because its easy to read but those scores can't be taken seriously.

I won't disagree but it's pretty obvious Bell is pretty much a low-level backup.  I understand people should temper their expectations for Remmers on the right side because he's nothing special but you can't discount how poorly he's played because of PFF.

Here is my biggest problem with Bell vs. Remmers. Bell is vilified and Remmers is considered a great right tackle for the future.

But you turn on the games, you watch Bell go 1v1 on the blind side with a premier pass rusher, you watch Remmers take on another good pass rusher with Tight end chipping to his right and Stewart backing him up. Both tackles get beat on the play but one guy had 2 helping and the other was on his own. Does Bell get a negative for the sack and Remmers get a neutral?

Maybe they both deserve a negative. Maybe they both need running back help but only one is getting it. Ideally we would find a guy that doesn't require help on both sides so Greg Olsen can run a route on 3rd and 4. Or maybe run an offense that doesn't require our weakest links to hold blocks while slow receivers run down field.

This may show my lack of knowledge when it comes to the tackle position, but from what I've seen Bell adjusted his game in a certain way.  As the year went on, you can see that he is more quick to back-step to gain angle awareness on a DE rather than hit the DE for a push and trust his strength.  He shuffles back hoping to push both speed rushers and power types off balance.  It cause the left side to constantly lose leverage on non-PA passing downs and it's been an obvious problem for me the right side did not have.

From what I see, the guy doesn't trust his own abilities.

Yeah he gets back very very quickly which leaves space between him and Norwell for the inside move. He's trying to protect the outside rush but he's losing the battle with his hands. I'm not disputing its sub par. I know he had a bicep injury against Seattle and maybe he never got that strength back. The one thing I admire about him is he plays no matter what. 2 missed games in 4 years. That's a good quality in a backup. The only reason he was never replaced is because no one else could stay healthy or play hurt.

Clemson fanboys will want Spiller but the reality is he is an east/west back and we need a north/south runner.  The way Shula runs this offense; screens, quick outs, etc would not benefit someone like Spiller.  But who am I?  I stare at spreadsheets all day.

Instead of making a new one, figured I'd bump this since it has links.

We're clearly moving into a more favorable position and we may find 2-3 guys on moderately priced contracts.

Re-looking at these lists, there are some very interesting possibilities.

I wonder how much a deep class at a particular position influences which FAs we target as well.  Safety is more favorable in FA than the draft this year...same with DT in my opinion.  Those are two spots to watch.  I think a few will need to get upgraded on both ends (draft and FA)..particularly CB, WR, and OL.
