Realistically, what is the future of Shula?

Shula was here at QB coach the whole time Chud was here. I don't know who was the one who thought to use it but it doesn't matter. If Shula didn't think it was right for Cam they would have taken it out.

I agree. It's hard to put the finger on where the problems lie, I'm just ready to see them figure it out and let's get this thing rollin

Cam can't learn a new offense in one off season? So what's he gonna do when he does get a new OC? Take a year off? Lol cmon man

Cam did pretty well his first season when he had to learn a new offense. Even broke Mannings long standing rookie passing record in that new offense. Just in case anyone forgot, there was also a lockout that season and Cam didn't get to work the coaching staff all summer. It's amazing how many people say BS like this with nothing to back it up.

I don't see Shula going anywhere either.  Had we finished 5-10-1, maybe.  However, RR seems to like Shula, and there is something to be said about keeping everyone together.  I just don't feel he is gone.  Special teams coach? bye bye.

I would like to see a change--just don't think it is in the cards.  RR is slow to change personnel.

If a team isnt executing up and down the roster it is a coaching problem. If some guys are executing and others aren't it a player problem. When Cam doesn't execute properly it is almost always poor technique or not anticipating a situation.

As for the OC generating points and yards, they are not on the field. It is like the old adage you can lead a horse to water but can't make him drink. Likewise a coach can do everything to help a player execute but he can't do it for him. And before you say then he should get rid of them, when you are playing backups and rookies because your talent has been diminished, exactly how do you keep doing that.

Some players didn't execute, others did, that much is a no-brainer. Now you can argue the playcalling was poor but there is no debate about poor execution. And lets not decide it is on the coaches to do everything. Fox was big on saying that if you execute correctly it doesn't matter if they know what you are doing, They still have to stop it.

For the better part of the year the offense wasn't executing up and down the roster.

So we agree it was likely a coaching problem

Lawd, please no.

If that's the case, fire Rivera now for us! :phew:

The fact of the matter is that with today's NFL rules, scoring wins.

Not defense.

Scoring.

Now defense?  Play that well and you win CHAMPIONSHIPS... that is as long as you can score.

Ron Rivera and Mike Shula are dinosaurs of an age long past.  Their philosophy is not conducive to being a consistent NFL winner.  And I don't get the impression that either of them are easily convinced that their philosophy is mistaken.

Sadly a 6 year old playing madden for the first time has more offensive creativity than Shula. At times it seemed like Shula was using best play option for him during games this season.

I amused my 24-yr old son greatly by pointing out every screen play that we ran Saturday prior to the snap of the ball.

It bears repeating... if an 52-yr old palooka like me who hasn't played football since grade school can figure out their plays, how the heck do they think NFL professionals on the other sideline are going to do?

Every time Cam threw a bomb on 3rd and 2, he had at least two other options underneath. That's a Cam decision.

I know it's not popular to hear, but it's true.

Even if you are right that still falls on the OC.

After the 2nd time (happened a billion times already) the OC needs to tell Cam that the deep is only to stretch the field and give more space for the underneath routes. ONLY throw the deep pass if the WR is WIDE open. Otherwise hit the higher % pass underneath.

Again some players did and some didn't. Kalil's was solid all year. Olsen was solid when thrown to. Remmers come in and plays at a high level right away. It took time for the offensive lineup gel once we sent guys like Silatolu and Chadker to the bench. It also took quite a while for Cam to develop chemistry with the receivers as he got no offseason work and was injured in the preseason.

I think that the coaches actiually did their best jobs this year turning this rag tag bunch into a decent team by season's end.

Cam struggled due to poor play calling on top of not having the best pieces around him.

Any coach that calls 50 yard bombs on every 3rd and short needs to be out of a job like yesterday.

You can throw deep in that situation for a lot of reasons ,first and foremost is the chance of a momentum swinging completion ,second is the defense may feel threatened and hold/interfere (free first down and momentum) ,third if it's intercepted at the one yard line it's far better than a punt (field position battle ) ,fifth so long as it is not a sack it allows you to qb sneak for it on fourth down easy chain mover if it's 3rd and 1 ,so it's actually a not a bad idea given the percentages I hope that helps.

You assume that no one is telling Cam what to do and watching film with him daily. I think he has been told these things repeatedly but when he gets into the game he doesn't always do what he was told or taught.

BTW you think no one tells him to throw offf his front foot and step into the throw? I bet he hears it all the time. Doesn't mean he does it.

The fan vote as the OP stated and everyone echos is that he leaves. In reality, I'll be surprised to see him go. Carolina is an overly loyal organization to begin with and Cam has a close relationship with Shula. The fact we made the playoffs (even with our record) and the fact Cam is close to him tells me his saved his ass. That's just my two cents. Not saying its what I want.
