So Cap numbers and possible cuts

No way in hell does Carolina cut Stewart. Not going to happen.

Umm...he has had 5 good games behind a much improved line. I want him to be here but a 13 million dollar cap hit for a RB is insane. People need to realize RBs are a dime a dozen and we could draft a runner or pick one up in FA who could be just as effective.

The biggest move we need to make is getting rid of Shula. He sucks. Apart from that I don't give a damn who we cut.

Cam is only a question mark to you. He was drafted before Luke so he needs to be taken care of before Luke.

Both their contracts are up at the end of 2015.  Luke has earned a new contract Cam hasn't.  Also Luke is a Future HOFer.  Same can not be said of Cam right now.

The Post-June 1 cap number is correct. It would be $3.8m. However, what's wrong is you are looking at the wrong year. That would be if we designate Stewart a post-June 1 cap cut AFTER next season.

edit: wait no, I think I'm wrong. Ugh this is confusing.

I'm taking that number with a grain a salt until proven otherwise.

Luke has an option year, just like Cam did. It'll be exercised, like Cam's was. And if you don't think Cam has "earned" a new contract, you are batshit insane.

That's like saying "Cut Steve Smith we will save 2m, he's not worth 9". The 9 might as well not exist, it's not a relevant number. The 2 is the relevant number and we signed Cotchery for a little less than 2. We traded Steve Smith for Cotchery to save a few hundred thousand. I know there was Gettledrama but from a numbers and production standpoint it was pointless.

Ok, let me see if I can figure out the mechanics of this. Cutting Stewart as post June 1 would accelerate his 2015 bonuses onto the cap:

$1.8m signing bonus

$1.357m option bonus

$0.643m restructuring bonus

=$3.8m cap hit

vs. 2015 cap figure of $8.3m

2015 cap savings = $4.5m

2016 cap hit = 8.3m ($1.8m signing + $2.714m option + 1.286m restructuring + 2.5m guaranteed base salary)

or if we keep as is it would be $8.3m cap hit in 2015, then post June 1 cut in 2016

$3.8m cap hit in 2016 (vs $9.55m 2015 cap number so $5.75m in cap savings)

then 2017 cap hit = $2m ($1.357m option + $0.643m restructuring) vs 2017 cap number of $8.25m or $6.25m of cap savings

To sum up, if we cut Stewart this offseason, we free up $4.5m in 2015 cap space and $1.25m of 2016 cap space. If we cut him after the season, we free up $5.75m in 2016 cap space and $6.25m of 2017 cap space.

I think we keep him one more year.

I could have also gotten all of these mechanics wrong, so take this with a grain of salt.

Who has a 13 mil cap hit? Stew's is only 8.3 mil. It would be ridiculous to cut him.

Also, it's important to note that the team still has to carry the base salary charge for a post-June 1 designated cut until the calendar actually hits June 1. So for free agency purposes, cutting Stewart would actually mean a "cap charge" of $8.05m until June 1, then it would drop to $3.8m. Considering Stewart's cap number for 2015 is $8.3m anyway, it probably doesn't make sense to cut him since no one will really be around in June when we actually get the benefit of the salary cap space.

Again, take with a grain of salt.

Capology is hard.

step 1 release all backs not named Fozzy

step 2 draft best back at pick 25

step 3 sit back and watch the huddle implode.

insert maniacal laugh here.

But I seriously hope not.

Well we know your not hurney.  Because he wouldn't do step one and would go straight to step 2.
