So Cap numbers and possible cuts

RB's are a dime a dozen. I have no problem entering next year with Fozzy as our starter and Tolbert as our backup. Find a fullback, chill out on the zone read poo (caused 2 fumbles against Seattle both games) and get back to conventional running

You need wide receivers in today's NFL. Focus on that.

I think Williams and maybe even Tolbert get cut which will open up a one or two spots for younger guys.  Stewart, Fozzy, a mid/late draft pick or UDFA and maybe Tolbert would be my best guess at what our backfield looks like next season.

The question is can you get a better player for the money saved from cutting them. A good quality starting caliber player will usually cost you about 3 to 4m for the season. A team will usually keep a handful of starters that exceed 4m on the season if they deem them key/impact players.

Here are your "business decisions" for 2015.

Cutting Charles Johnson gets the Panthers 10m to spend.

Trading Cam Newton gets the Panthers 14m to spend and some draft picks.

Cutting Thomas Davis saves 7.5m

Cutting Graham Gano saves 2.3m

Cutting Thomas DeCoud saves 1.9m

Cutting Jerricho Cotchery saves 1.5m

Cutting Roman Harper saves 1.5m

Gano is probably gone if he does not restructure. Harper, Cotchery and DeCoud are easily replaced if you can find another player who you value higher who will sign for 1.5m.

The hard ones are Charles Johnson, Thomas Davis and Cam Newton.

You can probably sign 2 or 3 DEs capable of what Charles Johnson has been doing for 10m. This is highly likely.

Thomas Davis is a great players, but can you get a younger LB who is an impact player for less than 7m on the season. You will have to compare Davis to the free agent LBs.

Cam Newton is the intriguing move. If you think he is a franchise player who can take you to a Super Bowl, you sign him long term. If you are not certain he can take you to the Super Bowl and carry a team, you shop him around to gain picks and then go after a new QB.

I have a feeling you are going to get some Thomas Davis and Cam Newton drama this offseason.

Was looking at Cap numbers for next year and a couple things caught my attention.

First Charles Johnson cap number next year is $20 million see him restructuring one more time.  Right now his contract ends after 2016 season.

Next is Cam's contract next year he will count $14.7 against the cap.  Most know my opinion on Cam and I think it will stay this next season.

Then we get to the Running backs and this is the interesting portion of the thread.

Stewart Cap figure is 8.3 million.  Before June 1st cut 13.6 million.  Now here is where we can make money. Post june 1st cut

3.8 million.  Yeah  great job Stewart but sorry time to part ways.

D Williams 6.3 million cap figure.  Before June 1st 6.6 million. Post june 1st 4.3 mil.  2 Million saved. Could he actually stay?

Tolbert 3.4 million cap figure.  Either before or after june 1st his cap hit will be 1 million. 2.4 million saved.

Cotchery cap is 1.9 million. Before june 1st it is 1.8 mil post june 1st 450,000 yeah don't see him here next year.

Harper cap is 1.8 million. before june 1st 1.2 post june 1st  300,000

Just a few but we have options and it will be interesting to see what happens.  Would not be surprised to see both Stewart and Dwill gone next year.  Was thinking only Dwill initially.

How are you getting a 3.8m cap hit for Stewart if he is a June 1st cut?  Pretty sure it is 6.3m.

Great Post but I don't see TD going anywhere.  Don't think The Big Cat would allow that.   Davis is in his final year of his contract and 31 years old.  He will play next year and retire a Panther or move on to another team.  One reason I brought up drafting a LBer in another thread.

8/11/2012: Signed a six-year, $37.811 million contract. The deal contains $22.5 million guaranteed, including a $9 million signing bonus. Another $6 million is available through incentives based on 1,200-yard rushing seasons and 1,600 all-purpose yard seasons. Stewart's 2014 base salary is fully guaranteed, as is $2.5 million of his 2015 salary. 2014: $785,000 (+ $715,000 "signing" bonus + $6.875 million option bonus), 2015: $4.25 million, 2016: $5 million, 2017: $5.5 million, 2018: Free Agent

This is fuging stupid. Who is talking about trading Newton? It won't happen. It's stupid. It's nonsense. Try again.

Stewart cap hit past next year?

Only 2.5 mil  guaranteed and his signing bonus of 1.8 million.  But Im not going to say Im right as I am pulling numbers off a website.  It could be more.  But if it true I cant see keeping him with how many times he has been hurt in the past.

I don't think that June 1st cut number is accurate. And I'm pretty sure you can only designate June 1st cuts for 1 or 2 guys per off season. On top of that, you still take the cap hit, just spread over two years. It's a small saving now at the cost of next year. I mean theoretically it probably would have been wise to cut all of those guys and tank for a year and come out with a high pick and cap space but thats a hard sell to fans.

Ryan Kalil needs to be looked at. Josh Norman needs to be considered for an extension. Tolbert needs to be looked at. Obviously something has to happen with CJ but he needs some time to grieve.

We really don't have that many players making money. It's guys we let go that sucked up cap space this year. I think Stewart is safe and Deangelo gets the axe.

Do we have any UFAs that are going to get paid elsewhere? Last year we lost Ginn, Mitchell, and Lafell.

This year I see Hardy, Bell, Dwan Edwards, Blackburn, Webb, Dickson, and Whitaker as guys that could get offers from other teams. Fozzy is an exclusive rights free agent which means we can offer him a minimum contract ad he is obligated to sign it.

Yeah didn't know how many we could designate and Stewart number does look whack but if it is right I would put him up.  CJ I would like to see him get a new contract and Kalil hopefully restructures.  I like how our contracts are now and Beason comes off the books next year.  Would love to lock up Luke up this offseason and Cam is the question mark.

Cutting Stewart as a June 1st cut would be shooting ourselves in the foot. Not even going into the fact he's been the number 1 back in the NFL the past 6 weeks, but we only save 2 mil in 2015 yet carry over 7.3 mil in dead money to 2016. No thanks. D-will may be gone. Thomas Decoud WILL be gone.

Cam is only a question mark to you. He was drafted before Luke so he needs to be taken care of before Luke.
