What does Gettleman do about Cam

Recommended Posts

Has Cam earned a lucrative, mostly-guaranteed contract? I would think if he had removed doubt before now, he would have it. I am guessing that there is some gray area and that is where Bus and Gettlemen will have to hash it out.

You are, essentially, doing a great job of setting Cam's side of the negotiations, and illustrating why I see a potential impasse. Gettlemen may not, and probably doesn't, agree with your perspective (or Cam's, if that was your intent). And I am not sure you can build around a QB you are having to tag. I don't know--with Hardy, it was to rent him until a solution could be reached--and we drafted Ealy. Now Hardy is gone. Your points are good, from Cam's perspective, but Gettlemen may not be looking at this like, "We have to keep Cam at all costs". In other words, If Cam does not accept the offer, or the compromised offer, he does not seem like the guy who would hand Bus Cook the checkbook. Gettlemen's number 1 priority is getting the cap into a manageable situation in order to build a franchise on smart contracts that benefit the Panthers. I don't think Gettlemen will allow any one player to jeopardize that plan. I think there will be some deal worked out, but I don't think there is reason to assume Cam has Gettlemen by the short hairs. When I watch Gettlemen's presser, I hear him mention Cam's mechanics and his inconsistency along with calling him a franchise QB--only when asked directly. To me, that is warning people--maybe Bus himself-- that Cam is not a finished product. Everyone wants Cam to stay--me too--but at the right price. Most people arguing that he deserves top dollar are also the people saying he needs weapons and protection. Where is the money for weapons and protection coming from? The defense? Which is the known commodity-the defense or an inconsistent and mechanically-unsound QB with weapons and protection? You have limited resources, and Cam has to know that he needs help. Tom Brady gets it, which is why he agreed to take a cut.

Bus Cook's reputation is why I see potential conflict. Are you assuming Gettlemen will give in to Bus' demands? I am not. Frankly, if Cam is given a "ground-breaking" deal that features a ton of guaranteed money, I would be shocked. I think they will pay him, but guaranteed money goes to proven, consistent performers--Gettlemen said that Cam is not there yet.

You have good points, but I was focused on what Gettlemen will do, and my hunch is based on his comments and past performance. Still, this is his first big contract, so we shall see.

I was trying to come from Cook and Newton's side of the argument. I think the big factor is Richardson will not wan't Cam to leave and I think will over step Gettlemen at least on this one occasion if it's the difference between Cam staying or Leaving.

If I'm right about Richardson, I do in fact expect Gettlemen to give in to Cam's and Cook's contract demands.

If I'm wrong on that front, I think Cam gets traded in a Tag and trade scenario after this season...however what I've gathered is the team wants his extension in place before this season starts and talks should start soon.

Some of you gentlemen are taking Gettleman's comments and running with them while ignoring the obvious.

We all know contract talks are coming in the future. We also know that QB's demand and get big money. Given that environment, do you really believe Gettleman is going to stand at the podium and talk about everything Cam brings to the team? How stupid would Gettleman have to be to go into negotiations showing his hand up front?

But by all means, continue to take everything he says verbatim as long as it fits your agenda.

TIME OUT

Discussion Boards are places where people share perspectives. While I have many solid relationships here, this board has a reputation for trolls and what I call "Snipers", people who attack the person instead of engaging in discussion--the purpose of a discussion board.  I do not do that--you will not find a post where I, out of the blue, attack another perspective disrespectfully or attack a person without similar provocation.  However, some here seem to think that is acceptable and are offended by my retaliation.  They should be, because my intent is to embarrass them.

I do not care if these people understand why I fight back or if I adhere to some code of behavior they feel that I should follow.  So those of you who find me offensive, it is because you were rude or disrespectful, cheap shots and smart-ass comments intended to get yourself pie or some other form of cyber acceptance. If you can't handle an opposing position, then either ignore it or respond respectfully.  It is apparent that I am being targeted by those who tried to disrespect me and I fought back, probably embarrassing them in some way.  This has been going on for some time, and I keep having to fend off insulting comments from people who, for some reason, felt they needed to police my shared thoughts.

I do not apologize to them, but I apologize to the others who had to endure it.  I was raised to never walk away from a fight--right or wrong--and in the process, stooped to their levels to expose them.  I have blocked them, so I hope to continue without threat of being ambushed or personally attacked by people who don't understand that my purpose here is not to take abuse from them, nor is it to agree with their perspectives.

The franchise tag means you're going to pay the average of the top 5 salaries at that position. Why would you pay someone top 5 money when he is, on a good day, a top 12 QB?

Because that's how the NFL works now because good Franchise QB's are hard to find. If you get one, you pay them. See Flacco, Ryan, Romo, Cutler...ext..

All of the above QB's had serious question marks when they got their deals, Cutler being the worst of the bunch.

Alex Smith "and I think we can Agree that Newton is tons better then and has more upside to boot" is making 17 million a season.

This thread is for speculation, so your points about Gettlemen's comments are interesting from that perspective. Why is he saying things about Cam that are unflattering? To me, that is the point of the thread--what is he going to do based on what we heard. Should Cam be offended?  Is he bracing us?   Trying to piece together his thinking is the whole exercise here, and the fun of it.

If people have agendas here, it is nothing more than a perspective on what Gettlemen might do.  It is a fun, off-season exercise.  If you are wrong, you get nothing.  If you are right, nobody cares and you get nothing.

I think Gettlemen has been fairly transparent and truthful when meeting the press.  Looking back at the Smith and Hardy situations, read his pressers before hand.  He was not trying to deceive.  So this is like poker (your example is a good one) and we are just guessing what his play will be.

I agree with this.  I think he gets a big offer--I really think the details of the contract is where this gets interesting.  That is the part where Bus and Gettlemen will go at it, so to speak.

If I were Buss Cook I would say "Hey, it is hard to be consistent when the left side of line are two UDFAS and the right side is a rookie and a DT.

Yet Cam still got you 24 TDS in 14 games despite a busted ankle, broken ribs, and broken back.

Oh and he won the NFCS twice in a row.

Something Drew Brees and Matt Ryan have not done.

It is not lost on me that Cam's perceived issues of inconsistencies aligned with the play of the offensive line. As O-line improved so did Cam's play. That is not a coincidence.

Cam is also on 25 years old. 2 years younger than Kaepernick and Dalton and 1 year younger than Russell Wilson.

He is a captain, and his teammates have continually said they feed off of him. He is the face of this franchise.

You know Mr Gettleman that most QBS do not fully hit their stride until year 6 or 7 of their careers. If my client has accomplished this much now, just imagine where he will be 3 or 4 years from now.

He has already won 2 NFCS championships

been to 2 pro bowls

accounted for 115 TDS in 4 years

Been to the divisional round of the playoffs in consecutive years

and yet is still the same age of most 2nd year QBs.

QBS like Cam Newton do not come around very often. We are willing to commit to you if you are willing to truly commit to Cam"

Yes guaranteed money will be the fighting point and to a smaller degree, at least imo, contract structure.

It will be a brutal contract negotiation.

THIS.

My point is this and nothing more than this.  Bus vs DG.  I just felt that his comments in the presser were the equivalent of moving his first pawn.  Maybe there is nothing to it, maybe there is.  I would say that Cam has the advantage, as did Cutler (as you said) and Flacco, etc.  Cutler is perhaps the best example of a QB with a ton of talent getting a mega deal.  Does it influence DG?  On the other hand, Flacco has been pretty good--it was risky at the time, but he is money in the playoffs.

It's a different situation with Cam/Cook. Gettleman never had any intention of signing or negotiating with Smith or Hardy. He could be as up front as he wanted without a negative impact.

Going into negotiations, he understands that everything he says or does could swing the results one way or the other. He is going to play things close until the deal is done.

I actually do think they'll offer him that kind of deal. Maybe with more guaranteed than the other two got, but I don't see it being a blockbuster.

Whether or not he'd accept such an offer is another story.

I'm not expecting a blockbuster but I'm expecting much more gauranteed. Didn't kap get only like 15 gauranteed with incentives? Yeah that's not going to happen with cam

Probably dead on as the presses comments being the first pawn move, the question is does that infuriate Cook and/or Cam??

Cook is notorious for being a hard nose negotiator and from all intents and purposes from his seldom public pressers, the same might be said for Gettlemen.

Imo, the problem with those comments is that the QB almost always has the advantage going into contract talks, Cam has additional advantages because of his age, total numbers and back to back playoff trips that just drive up the price. Add in that he's the only face for the team that's really marketable (nationally) seems to put Gettlemen and the Panthers in a precarious negotiating position.
