What does Gettleman do about Cam

Gettlemen will not pay Cam a ton of cash because losing teams would.

Funny when people get all emotional about this--I assure you, Gettlemen won't.  Cam will get a fair deal.  He has not played well enough to dictate what the amount will be and hold DG in checkmate.  Gettlemen has options, and will consider all of them.  That is why he did not give Hardy a big deal (and drafted Ealy) and sent Smitty packing.  Call it dumb if you want, but you are not trying to get this team out of Cap Hell.  He will offer Cam a fair deal, guaranteed money based on his performance and incentives (unguaranteed) based on his potential upside.

Nothing that Gettlemen has done leads me to believe that Cam is in control of the situation.  We are in the same situation the Niners were in with Kaepernick, the Bengals with Dalton, and the Ravens with Flacco.  Flacco got a big deal in terms of guaranteed money, but the other 2 were incentive-laden deals.  Since Flacco has been money in the playoffs, has a ring, and is a top 10 (statistically) rated QB, he got guaranteed $$.  The others were not, but wanted a big contract, so they got one that is not predominately guaranteed.  Cam is in the Kaepernick/Dalton category.

I agree with all of this, it all depends what Cam wants...Money or making the playoffs. Makes sense to offer him an incentive laden contract and let him earn his cash with a team that essentially, rebuilt itself in the middle of the 2014 season but unlike some other teams that will offer more guaranteed money-  haven't sniffed the playoff game in a while-there are worse O lines out there.

another point is that Cam is taking hits, some of it is the O line's fault and some is his style and its going to be a concern for a many teams that could offer more cash.

I really think the Getts made some moves for Cam this year ( shipping Smitty out...if the intention was to give him the locker room) and although it was a very tough year on Cam, Getts will offer a Daulton like contract ( like MH said- Some guaranteed money plus signing and other caveats but around $9M cap hit a year). He already has some working parks like KB/Olsen and where will find a D like this?

I think he does take it because it is his team and we have made around the corner in rebuilding process. besides- what other teams have a MFCEO and board like this?

Good points.  This is between Bus Cook and DG now.  I get the impression from what I read, that Bus wants to wait, not Gettlemen.  I would invest in Cam Newton, but that is where I must make a distinction--some on here are talking "blank check"--that is what Hurney did, for all intents and purposes.  Cam has not earned it, and the contract will be based on the best interest of the Panthers first or it won't be offered.

Some people do better with commitments and votes of confidence ("You believe in me, I'm not going to let you down.") Cam is such a person. He isn't one who excels with unneeded questions lingering. Just make him a captain already so he doesn't have to think about it anymore. You did, he took it seriously and tried harder to do the things he didn't do well. Get the contract done so he doesn't have to think about whether you believe he's the guy, and he'll be even better because you believe in him. He's not going to "slack off" when he gets paid.

Besides, he has "earned it" regardless of what you think. The record books prove that much.

There are many on here who refuse to acknowledge his shortcomings -- they blame everything and everyone else.under the sun.  Cam is a good athlete with incredible upside, but he has never really been in the top 10 and, unless he fixes his mechanics, will never be more than he is.  David Gettlemen is not going to pay for flash and potential.  He is going to analyze Cam's production and if potential comes into the discussion, he will analyze his coachability and upside.

While Cam may not be consistent, I assure you that Gettlemen has been and will be.  He is not overpaying for players.  Period.  He understands the QB market and how hard it is to find a good QB.  However, Cam is not holding all the cards.  People who think so are fooling themselves.  Cam will get an incentive-laden deal if he plays the potential card.  If he plays the production card, he gets a deal far less than the elite qbs.  So, if Cam is to become great, he will have to take a deal with more incentives and less guaranteed money.  If he does not want to do that, why should Gettlemen bet on his upside if Cam won't?

This team is poised to make a run, and I am pretty sure that Cam wants to be here. The great ones, right or wrong, are measured by wins and losses and (ultimately)  Karats more than rushing and passing yards.  We will add a weapon at WR and a T this offseason.  Cam will feel good about his chances here.

This is a very good post, explaining Cam' contract situation very throughly. Salute

Not so sure about this. If GM's hands are forced ie Cam leaving to a team that will overpay him (there will be a team willing to do so) or letting him walk he might be forced to overpay. I can't say id blame him too much either. That is a very hard place to be in. You let Cam walk when you are a playoff team competing for conference titles and soon hopefully SB's you better be able to bring in someone that can atleast keep up current expectations / performance.

If I am GM, I am gonna bring in the best OC and QB coach money can buy and pray to God Cam can turn the corner.

What I know is if Seattle wasn't 8 for 8 on 3rd down on Saturday, the Panthers might be in the NFC Championship game. QBs can turn the ball over multiple times a game and still "win," right Andrew (Luck)?

I am basing this on what I know of Gettlemen. Going to be interesting.

Agreed, but Luck did catch Peyton on a good day.  That third down productivity killed us.  Take Bell out of the picture and we win.  He is terrible.

Anyone who thinks DG is giving Cam 22 million next year is insane. Tag or not. (That's roughly the tag price)

I don't get why so many think it's either low teens or 20+ million,  I think it's perfectly reasonable we'll find ground somewhere in the mid/upper teens for his 2016 base salary (of his eventual deal) whether moving forward it has escalators or not.

Interesting article highest paid winner was Eli at $14 million. Highest paid participant and only player higher paid than Eli was Peyton at $23 million. Most winner were under $10 million.

Good job.

Now this year will feature 2 QB's in the final 4 still on rookie deals.  Brady is no longer on a "max" deal, and Aaron is the best in the league at the moment.

It's really hard to build championship teams when you are paying your QB such a high % of the cap.

Glad Gman took my advice from a few days ago and is most likely going to take a wait and see approach this coming season.

They want me to post more, but alas, time will not permit

Gman already lurking on my draft posts, guess I will be invited to shallot soon for lunch
