Possible Assistant Options

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I'd like to see the read-option used like the wildcat has been (i.e. occasionally, but definitely not as a focal point)

speaking of the wildcat, is it my imagination or did we finally rid ourselves of that completely unnecessary gimmick this year?

i can't remember using it at all.

we have cam frikkin newton behind center. the wildcat was the first step towards having mobile QBs who can run the ball. other than appeasing dwill, i can't think of any reason that we should have used it as long as cam is the QB.

the read option shouldn't be the base anymore than a draw play or screen should be. it should be one tool among many that we use on offense to keep defenses honest.

I vaguely remember us lining up in a wildcat formation, maybe once?

But yeah, it's time for the training wheels to come off.

I don't understand why Kyle Shanahan is so well thought of. I cannot think of a good offense he's run.

I want a coach that is going to teach Cam to play in the NFL. Shula and Dorsey did not play in the NFL at a quality level. I want someone that is going to teach Cam all the small things about being a QB. Teach him a pump fake, drawing offside, and to make better decisions with the blitz. I feel like Cam is being taught to draw with crayons when he should be learning to paint. And that's not an indictment on Cam.

must have been a game i slept through when i was working 7 day weeks on third shift.

there were quite a few of those. considering the record, there were probably quite a few futile attempts at things that i probably missed out on.

i looked at kyle shanahan the way i looked at mcdermott before coming here.

really bright and innovative mind, but lacking in maturity and discipline in the running of a system. mcdermott needed someone like rivera to keep him from going beserk and to help him be successful. i think mcdermott has gotten better. i thought that kyle might have after working with his dad. not sure that happened.

Well a Panthers OC needs to be able to run an offense with little to no input from Ron. He really has to be a leader and not an apprentice. Maybe Kyle can be that guy but I just wasn't impressed with his previous stops.

absolutely agreed. i thought that rivera would be good for mcdermott because of rivera's knowledge of defense and familiarity with the scheme and the role...acting as a mentor to mcD.

i'm of the persuasion that rivera shouldn't not just be managing the offense, but he shouldn't be managing the game at all. i have no faith in his ability to consistently manage successful campaigns against other teams.

i think ramsdell could be the guy that kyle needs, but i don't believe that kyle believes he should be listening to anyone. he seems like a chud type control freak who is more in love with his ideas than winning games as part of a team.

I don't get it either..  Shanahan got Manziel killed on that one play against us.

I'd have to think who I'd want as the OC between Shula and Shanahan (which isn't a good thing)

So who might we look at if, as hoped, this offseason sees some turnover on the coaching staff?

Some possibilities (with varying levels of availability)

OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Ken Zampese - Quarterback Coach, Cincinnati Bengals (would require permission)

Rick Dennison - Quarterback Coach, Baltimore Ravens (would need permission and could mean changing systems)

Greg Roman - Offensive Coordinator, San Francisco 49ers (likely system change; not that big a fan, honestly)

Marty Mornhinweg - Offensive Coordinator, New York Jets (would mean switching to WCO)

Bill Callahan - Offensive Line Coach, Dallas Cowboys (older, hasn't done well of late)

SPECIAL TEAMS COACH

Bruce DeHaven - Assistant Special Teams Coach, Carolina Panthers (the easy option)

Brad Seely - Special Teams Coach, San Francisco 49ers (Niners next coach may want to keep him)

Bobby April - Special Teams Coach, Raiders (Raiders probably want to keep him)

Joe DeCamillis - Special Teams Coach, Chicago Bears (could be in high demand)

QUARTERBACK COACH

John Ramsdell - Offensive Assistant, Carolina Panthers (again, the easy choice, if he wants the job)

Geep Chryst - Quarterback Coach, San Francisco 49ers (spent several years coaching here, could also be an OC candidate)

Matt Cavanaugh - Quarterback Coach, Chicago Bears (being looked at for the Browns OC job)

Dowell Logains - Quarterback Coach, Cleveland Browns (not all that experienced)

Why do I feel that this is wishful thinking?  I am like Jawney--I really don't keep up with other teams' assistants that much.  I trust your opinion, however, Mr. Scot and will look into these names.  Here is to hoping Rivera sees the need.
