Wager between city mayors

Despite the Panthers being 11-point underdogs, Clodfelter did not take any points from Murray or ask for a greater prize package.

"Obviously, our score will be higher than their score, but beyond that I don't have a score prediction," Clodfelter said.

Murray is picking the Seahawks to win the game, which kicks off on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. ET at CenturyLink Field.

"We beat them in October, and on Saturday it's not even going to be close," Murray said in an announcement from the mayor's office. "The Seahawks are virtually unbeatable at home, and we know the 12s are going to be insanely loud. Go Hawks!"

If the Panthers win, Murray will send the Queen City a collection of Seattle music memorabilia. The gift basket will include vinyl LPs by Nirvana, Mudhoney, the Shins and the Postal Service, CDs by Shabazz Palaces, Sleater-Kinney, Sarah Silverman and Luluc, and other memorabilia.

If the Seahawks win, Clodfelter will send the Emerald City a gift basket full of items that are emblematic of Charlotte. These include recycled sneakers by Charlotte-based ReKixx, salted caramel brownies from Amelie's French Bakery, and paraphernalia from Olde Mecklenburg Brewery.

Additionally, the mayor of the losing team will take a selfie in the winning team's jersey.

Mayors make wager

Pat McCrory made wagers like this all the way through the Super Bowl in 03, though if I remember right, one mayor backed out (I forget who).

    • I'm only in favor of this if they make it like cigarettes.  Shouldn't be plastered all over the presentation of the game.
    • Yes but this is under the assumption that most of the players are susceptible to this sort of coercing from those type of elements. I think those actual cases are rare. Plus the sportsbooks are more motivated than most to stamp it out because it loses them money. It's just a natural side effect of having gambling at all. IMO, better for it to be legal. Now, I do find it insanely hypocritical(but also typical) that all these sports leagues that once turned their noses up and were very high and mighty about sports gambling are so openly supporting it now that the megabucks are rolling in.
    • Well I should also say another caveat is positional value. You have to be careful violating that. For the scenarios you are describing, those are also things that free agency is for. Free agency should always set up the draft. Improve the roster and then go shopping for things to potentially take your roster up a notch.  Lastly, we are in scenario 2. Our roster is still not good and we have holes at most position groups. We are actually in the "BPA All Day" range.
