Honest discussion on Cam's accuracy issues.

His footwork was very bad last night which was odd because he was making those throws easily early in the season. Most likely the injuries are getting to him so he has to throw of his back foot. Cam didnt play well but he doesn't deserve to be bashed! He made game saving runs and was never quick to leave the pocket. The guy knows and has what it takes to be elite but being as banged up which makes it hard...

There were a few plays where his vision was off. The Cotch route quit int...Philly had one one one on a post rte in the middle of the field.

He also missed Cotch on the seam route to overthrow ed dickson on the out and up rte.

To me that was concerning...add Bersin in a slant hot rte on the slot cb blitz.

One or two of those throws to Dickson that weren't caught were really good passes that Dickson just didn't haul in.  One of them was perfectly placed between two defenders by the sideline and Dickson laid out to catch it and just didn't.  That's on Dickson, not Cam.  Cam overthrew Dickson once, and a couple other times to other players, but there were a number of drops by multiple receivers.

Listen to some of you.  "His mechanics are bad because he has been injured and if you don't agree with that you are a moron."  (His mechanics have been an issue for 4 years and did not develop after he was injured, but still, you are a moron if you think the mechanical issues are his fault.  Note: This excuse used to be the OL sucks.  Thank God KB is struggling so we can blame the WRs when Cam overthrows backs in the flat).

The facts are this:  Cam is inconsistent.  He is very effective when he takes his drop and steps into the throw.  When he does not deliver the ball at the top of his drop, he struggles.  That is when he throws off his back foot.  Since he had time to throw and has for several weeks, why is he still throwing off his back foot? I realize that I am a moron for stating that, and I apologize for my lack of understanding.

Did you see what Arizona and their awesome defensive coordinator were doing to Cam yesterday?  That tells you what they think of Cam's game.  I saw their strategy as one that would force Cam into check down situations and make him adjust to blitzes from the DBs.   Not a technique a team uses very many times in a football game, but we saw it a lot.  What do they think of Cam?  I would guess that they wanted him to check down or over to the hot WR.  Cam did not seem to do that often if at all.  Now think about it--they play a division with 2 pretty good mobile qbs in it, and if you look back, they do the same thing to Kaepernick but not Wilson.  Why is that?

Remember when Ben Roethlisberger was setting touchdown records at one point in the season, and people here were gushing over him and saying that Newton should play more like he does? He hasn't been playing so hot since then, and he threw 2 picks in a loss last night.

All quarterbacks experience highs and lows sometimes, even Peyton Manning struggled recently against the Bengals, throwing 4 picks.

Some Panthers fans here really don't watch much football, and it shows pretty clearly.

Those same people were gushing all over Rivers jock as well after he started the season off hot. Rivers looked like garbage numerous times this season and is a product of the media. Easily one of the most overrated QB's in the league.

In the biggest game of the year, Rivers threw some terrible balls in KC and now the Chargers aren't even in the playoffs.

People take Cam for granted.

When he presses (tenses up), he messes up. At least people acknowledge that he's "frustrating" because he makes some elite passes then has periods within games where he misses too many easy ones; like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. As usual, his problem isn't really "accuracy," it's being inconsistent overall.

That's what happens when "emotion" is what fuels you. You should just be good just because you are good, not because you "care" or it matters more at a certain point. That's the real maturity that he needs: Being more businesslike with his play than just out there trying to "have fun." Once he gets there, he won't lose his focus as often. It is possible for him to use "having fun" to make his play more "businesslike." The mind is a powerful thing.

He threads the needle, makes pinpoint passes all the time, places the ball where only his receiver can get it. That's accuracy.

Then he loses focus and slips for several series.

Arizona was a ghost haunting Cam, so after Cotchery stopped on his route and he threw that interception (I saw the highlights), it probably felt like deja vu. They also needed to get that first playoff win to get that monkey off their backs, so the nerves started up (tensed up), and also Carolina is notorious for getting sloppy with a lead, so that was probably part of it, too.

If they are in Seattle next week, I expect him to play like he did in New Orleans and Atlanta because that's a foe they want to face. If it's Green Bay, I'd be surprised if he plays well since that environment/opponent won't be as "fun." He still isn't mature enough yet for every game/possession to be equally "fun."

Unfortunately, your assessment-one that I find to be objective and based on observationl-is probably going to lead to some rather direct and insulting responses, heavily-laden with assumptive excuses and anger.

How is Cam different than he was in 2011?  Same style of play (one that leads to early retirement and not Canton), same mechanical issues, same attitudinal issues.  More maturity, especially when we are winning.  The difference in Carolina is on the other side of the ball.

I think we will keep Cam, but we are going to have to surround him with play-making weapons.  We need a QB coach who is going to fix those mechanical issues.

What bothers me most is the pouting he goes through when we are struggling.  (Here is where people say, "He was hurt!!!).  A QB needs to exude confidence and leadership.  If he was your captain, would you follow him into battle when he is down?

Rarely do you have a great QB whose temperament is not similar to a poker player's.  To me, Phillip Rivers' biggest downfall is his emotions.  He yells at refs, teammates, and gets too animated.  While he is considered to be elite, his teams have always underperformed at crunch time.  Drew Brees is animated before the game, but during the game--stoic. Look at the playoff QBs--- Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck, Joe Flacco, Tony Romo, Matthew Stafford, even Andy Dalton-they are pretty calm, confident qbs.

When Cam is good--stepping into his throws, smiling, etc. he is an elite qb.  When he starts throwing off his back foot, the pouts come out and, basically, the outcome of the game shifts to the defense to determine.
