"Practice with time and a score"

we all know this team lives or dies by how many injuries we have..so it's probably a good thing that they might be playing carefully..we are on a tightrope right now and already had some close calls (beason, smith) and some not so close (kemo)...Preseason is for those who are trying to make the team for the most part...

Giving 100% in the preseason is not going to help us in the regular season..

not sure anyone is saying that practice is pointless or not important.

there is just a better perspective that is being asked for by those who think that practice/preseason games are not an indicator of how the regular season...ie, the games that really matters, will go.

i will never agree, btw, that players should approach either with the same intensity in practice and preseason games that they do in real games unless they are trying to win a roster spot. even then i think it's questionable how good of an idea it is but i can't think of any other way to find out how those people will be.

i also don't think that the offense or defense needs to be showing much of what they have as far as scheme or plays or game calling is concerned until it really matters.

If you want to get a gauge of where the team is at offensively and deffensively then watch this Saturday's game. It is the third pre-season game, against a team we do not play in the reg season that runs O and D schemes very similar to every non-conference team we play this year. They will probably do a little game planning for this game just to see if they are thinking in the right direction.

I know one thing...the Jets and Ravens defenses sure as hell look like they're taking the pre season seriously.

yeah, if we practice like we practice and the Raven practice like they practice on Saturday......there will be a big difference on the scoreboard at the end of practice.

I guess we will see a different team the next two games. We don't have to play them in the season. But Even Coach Fox said on the Carolina Huddle this past week that "We didn't show too much, cuz we have to play them again. But that is later in the season and they will have plenty of tape by then." Whatever....not sure of my point now... Anyway, did somebody mention it's just preseason?

First 3 games in preseason to me are for guys fighting for a roster spot and for guys who need to improve.

Actually the first and last. The second has more reps for 2nd string and third has more reps for starters. The last game is for the players who are just trying to get on the team. We will see more Cantwell and Lee and Birmingham and Beavers and so forth.

This is a quote from Julius Peppers on the Observer's website about preseason. He went on to say, "It's not like we gameplan for each other or are trying to make any statements right now."

Essentially correct.

Given how some fans feel about him - and the team in general - right now, not necessarily the best choice of words.

Ok don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but here goes:

Every defense they are playing this preseason is pretty good, and 3/4 of them run a 3-4 D at least part time. This year they will be facing five 3-4 defenses which is a large amount for them. I wonder how much that is factoring in to the O they are running in preseason? Testing out how they can attack those looks? I.E.-IIRC they aren't throwing a whole lot of deep balls so far and seem to be focusing on shorter/intermediate passes.

I have also seen them using Dump off screen passes. This is something we didnt use last year but with Dwill it will be very effective. What better then to draw a blitz up the middle and dump it off to Dwill or Goodson on the out side. Just like Smoke with Steve Smith.
