comp picks?

Plus comp are at the end, a 6th is really a early 7th. Form history most teams use comp picks to take highly risky players, cause in a way its house money. Having a few comp changes your whole draft plan tho, adds to trading picks too.

Not only this, but with Gettleman's eye for talent among the udfas, 5th through 7th round picks are more valuable to us than they were in past years.

I just made an update to the projection that, unfortunately, opens up a bad scenario for Carolina.  Basically, someone pointed out that I missed Ed Dickson in the original version.  However, even though the program is currently projecting that bad scenario, I still think you should be fairly optimistic.  Here's the part of the update that's Panther-specific:

In the main comp pick post, here are the new altering scenarios for Carolina:

In the end, I still stand by what I said earlier and think the Panthers get that 5th for Mitchell--with the 6ths being less certain but still very possible.

I highly doubt Cason, Dickson and Webb would count against us. They were all 1-year vet min deals.

Remember, we also lost Jordan Senn and Dominik Hixon to the Bears. If Cason, Dickson and Webb count against us then Senn and Hixon would count in our favor.

I don't think Senn and Hixon made their respective teams, so I wouldn't count on them helping us at all.

This article actually references those two guys:

We are going to end up with between 0-3 picks.  The question will be if Cason, Dickson and/or Webb qualify.  Just because they signed a min deal isn't a guarantee they won't based on past examples.  There seems to be some other variables that play into why some minimum guys do and some don't.

More info about qualifying:

Also the league only gives out 32 compensatory picks, so a player could qualify for one but it might fall out of that range and therefore not be awarded.

# of players doesn't matter really only salaries matter.

I am curious to where you got this info.  Most articles that I have found actually say number of players lost does matter.  Similar players cancel out and your pick is based on what is left.

I have also read that if a team loses an equal amount of eligible FAs as they gain there is still a possibility of getting some compensation if the value of the lost players is greater then those gained.  In this situation the picks fall at the end of the list, and in some cases not in the top 32 so therefore not awarded.

Here is an article that explains this very situation with the Raiders:

I was speaking in general terms once you figure out what everyone is worth (your free agents you signed vs free agents you lost) you can then start the process of elimination for picks you would be eligible for. I was just saying that just because you lose 4-5 free agents that doesn't mean you get a comp pick for them if none of them signed for hardly any money, that's why I said # of players doesn't matter it's how much they signed for.

Ah....since you said "only" I took your statement more literal.  So you agree both the number of players and salaries matter?

Hardy will likely get us a draft pick if he's signed by another team for >$8m.

Keep wracking up those picks!

Not until next year though. My hope is that he signs a huge deal somewhere and nets us a 3rd round comp pick next year. That'd be the best possible outcome of an otherwise shitty situation.
