comp picks?

Captain Morgan

Assuming DG will do another great job in this draft, more GMs will prolly poach the players we try to stash on IR thru waivers or off our practice squad, ala New England and Tyler Gaffney. (At least from GMs who know what the hell they're doing)

Amen about 2010

It did just hit me that I believe the pick we got for Peppers as comp ended up being Fua.

Boy, that's depressing.

  • 3 weeks later...

The only guy we signed who will be viewed as a true FA signing will be Cotchery. Roman Harper signed a decent enough deal (2yr/3.6M) but was cut by the Saints so he doesn't count in terms of FA added versus FA lost. Avant, DeCoud, Cason, Dickson and others were cut by previous team or signed here a vet minimun contract.

My prediction is we get 3 comp picks: 5th (Mitchell), 6th (Munnerlyn), 6th (Ginn+LaFell-Cotchery). Best case scenario would be a 4th and a 5th by Mitchell and Munnerlyn.

So OverTheCap just did a projection for comp picks. They had us getting a 5th for Mitchell. The next bit is interesting:

  • If either Antoine Cason or Joe Webb do not qualify, Carolina will get a 6th for Captain Munnerlyn.
  • If both Antoine Cason and Joe Webb do not qualify, Carolina will get two 6ths for Captain Munnerlyn and Ted Ginn.

It all dependes of the value the NFL gives to Cason and Webb based on their contracts (veteran minimun). If they think both have 7th round value then we have 3 adquired Free Agents qualified for the formula:

Joe Webb (7th rounder) would cancel out Ginn (6th rounder and lowest value of FA lost)

Antoine Cason (7th rounder) would cancel out LaFell (6th rounder and 2nd lowest value of FA lost)

Jerricho Cotchery (7th rounder) would cancel out Munnerlyn (6th rounder and 3er lowest value of FA lost)

BUT if they think both Cason and Webb are not worthy of compensation since they signed a veteran minimun contract (that's what i based my prediction on) we only have 1 player qualifying for the formula:

Jerricho Cotchery (7th rounder) would cancel out Ginn (6th rounder and lowest value of FA lost)

That would net us a 5th (Mitchell, this is sure no matter what), a 6th (Munnerlyn) and a 6th (LaFell) making my prediction spot on  :D

Great job man.

A bit worried about Cason because he started 11 games for us so he might cancel out LaFell.

Joe Webb only played in 7 games and was a vet min signing so I think we're going to get a 6th rounder for Ted Ginn.

Hey guys, this is Nick, the writer of the OTC article on the comp picks.  Since I remembered I had a very old account here, I just wanted to additionally make a Panthers-specific point that I really couldn't include in the main post due to length (so many things to deal with on this subject!).  Anyway, you guys should be fairly optimistic that Cason and Webb won't count.  I was particularly generous with the low-level signings in this projection due to the fact that from last year a few low-level guys somehow qualified when they wouldn't have in the past.  I honestly don't know how it's going to turn out since it's a newish development, so I decided not to cherry pick too much and just include everybody.  But since Cason was a bargain basement signing at $730k (and cut to boot, but it was late enough that that shouldn't matter), and Webb, as TheSpecial1 mentioned, hardly played, it would not surprise me if the Panthers get one or two 6ths when it's all said and done.  I think mario laid it out very well--definitely count on the 5th for Mitchell, and be cautiously hopeful for 6ths.

Thanks for your excellent input on this.

We should be excited about the draft. For the first time in 4 years we have all our 7 picks and we should get at least 2 or possibly 3 additional comp picks. Gettleman and Don Gregory have proven the last 2 years that they know NFL talent when they see it.

Want to thank you for that article. I thought i had a pretty decent idea about how comp picks work but after reading that it blew my mind how complex it can be. Us Panthers fans have it fairly easy to understand but there are teams out there in pretty wild scenarios (Cincy can get a 4th rounder for Anthony Collins... or nothing at all!).
