comp picks?

What about the runing back we lost to New England ? Would losing Hardy get us a future comp pick ?

We'll get nothing for Tyler Gaffney since his contract didn't expire naturally, plus it was for the minimum, so 2 strikes right there. Losing Hardy will get us a comp pick depending on the contract he signs, how many snaps he plays, and postseason performance with his new team IFFFFFFF we don't sign a free agent from a different team to a similar contract. Comp pick will in the 2016 draft, not this next one.

They don't reveal the formula for comp picks but what infuriates me every (recent) year is watching successful teams get them.

Here's the formula, "be successful". If you are successful other teams go after your free agents and have to bid high and move fast.

The league might not reveal the formula but there are definitely teams out there that have a good understanding of it.

Here are two articles that illustrate this:

The 3rd round comp pick we got was for Peppers and his $90 million contract.  I don't think we will get a 3rd for anyone we lost.  But Mitchell signed for $25 million so a 4th would not be out of the question.  Harper and Decoud were both cut from their teams so they don't count for us.

there's no telling what the cut-off for 3rd rounder is, so the panthers may meet that threshold. also the different salaries may accumulate. it would be nice if the formula were known but I guess I kind of see why - it would put an unnecessary hand onto the free agent market, like you see in baseball with compensatory draft picks lost/gained for certain free agents signed/lost. still, i imagine teams would love to be able to plan for having certain draft picks, especially since they can't be traded.

There's a guy on football future, who has a around 95% success rate at getting the picks right a few days before they are released. Either he has some special formula or inside infor. Hes got a history of being right. I'm sure goggle will show proof.

Wait for his picks, its the gospel.

The only guy we signed who will be viewed as a true FA signing will be Cotchery. Roman Harper signed a decent enough deal (2yr/3.6M) but was cut by the Saints so he doesn't count in terms of FA added versus FA lost. Avant, DeCoud, Cason, Dickson and others were cut by previous team or signed here a vet minimun contract.

My prediction is we get 3 comp picks: 5th (Mitchell), 6th (Munnerlyn), 6th (Ginn+LaFell-Cotchery). Best case scenario would be a 4th and a 5th by Mitchell and Munnerlyn.

10 picks would be nice. I'm not usually a fan of trading up but having extra picks would give you that luxury.

I'm greedy but I wouldn't bother trading....10 picks = all the drafting.

Either way is fine with me. Nothing wrong with adding more depth and back-ups to put in the pipeline to develop into starters in a year or two and replace some guys who will be older and take up a lot of salary cap space. Next year would be harder to justify this approach, tho, because we only have 22 starter spots, and DG will prolly re-stock the pantry this draft.

But I could go with a trade up, too. It worked with Bene, so I could see DG doing it again. More likely in the 2016 draft after DG uses 2015 draft to fill out the roster more. Why use the later draft picks on someone who, although talented, simply is lost in the 53 man roster number game?

I figure he'll likely play the practice squad game with the lower comp picks anyway, but....as you say, it's never a bad thing to keep things stocked.  We never want to get to the 2010 level again.....

Assuming DG will do another great job in this draft, more GMs will prolly poach the players we try to stash on IR thru waivers or off our practice squad, ala New England and Tyler Gaffney. (At least from GMs who know what the hell they're doing)

Amen about 2010

    • First off, he's not even eligible for a contract yet.  You have to play three years. And thank goodness! All we saw last year were glimpses.  Yes, those glimpses were enough that I think every fan wants to see him come back next year.  But bottom line is that so far, with only a couple games worth of exceptions, he hasn't yet shown that he's a FRANCHISE QB.  He hasn't shown the consistent ability to elevate the players around him. He could be the guy.  After week two of this year, just saying that much is a massive, massive positive swing.  But let's see him put it together for 17 games.  Let's see him make the people around him BETTER.  Then we can talk about extending him. Let's not lose sight of the fact that thus far in his career, in no season has BY exceeded the rookie stats of MAC JONES. We should  be excited for the possibility, but we certainly haven't seen yet what we need to see to declare we have our guy.
    • People cared as it was happening, but after a year or two, most people had moved on. There was no public outcry to bring the NBA back to Charlotte, it just happened.
    • I can agree with that.  Fwiw, I wish we would go back to the 4-3 and bring in a more traditional defensive end.   That being said, I will point out that some thought Thomas Davis would be a safety when we drafted him.  It was of course clear early that lb was his best position.
