I like what Q said his thinking was. To the guys in the film they had NO clue the history nor the outcome.

So to them, they did what they thought they had to do.

That's kind of a cop out though, ain't it? He must have said that a little tongue in cheek. No way would he have cut back on his style had any of the guys stopped in the middle of the take and said, "Pardon me Q, but this isn't really how it happened...can we play it with more accuracy?"

Hell no....

I will have to remind myself repeatedly that this is a spaghetti western set in WWII France.

I tend to take movies about WWII much too seriously, and when I first heard about this film and saw some trailers I noted that Pitt's character appears to be a member of the 1st Special Service Force, a unit I have studied.

He has no business being in France in June 1944.

See? I have a problem. I'm sure the film is excellent.

I like authenticity, but I forgot that this was based on something that kind of happened, so I'm gonna let it go.

An old friend of mine made aircraft documentaries, his proudest accomplishment was that when the commentary references a specific unit, film from that unit was on the screen. If he mentioned an F-86K, damnit a F-86K was being shown, not a D or whatever.

The point is, the characters don't know the conclusion of history yet because they are in the moment.

Had the trailer said a true story or the uber hollywood creative license phrase, BASED on a true story than yeah.

He wanted to turn a typical genre(war) inside out and look at it from some very very different angles.

this post will have spoilers.

honestly the movie wouldn't have worked if it ended differently. as soon as they said Hitler would be at the premier, i was thinking "how is he going to escape" or "what's going to go wrong" and that the protagonists were going to fail, because they had to, that's history. when the plan actually worked, and the nazis lost and hitler got machine gunned, i was delighted and cheering (quietly to myself). not really because the good guys won, but because i had set it up in my mind that they couldn't, based on reality, and was waiting on the predictable ending where the war continued.

I haven't seen it so I don't know what he conclusion is....I was referring to what the daughter of one of the real guys said....that they weren't a group of guys just running around the countryside "killin' natsis". The one point in particular, about not taking prisoners as an example.

He wanted to turn a typical genre(war) inside out and look at it from some very very different angles.

If that's the way you see it, fine...based on the trailers, it looks to me that he just wanted to make the over-the-top style movie that he's known for. And I don't have any problem with that. I realize it wasn't a strict retelling of history but the daughter of the guy didn't seem to take that into account. And like I think I already said before, when people start looking at QT's movies as historical documentaries, I'll worry about their accuracy.

The movie takes place before the liberation of Paris, so we are talking late June to maybe late July 1944.

The first Special Service Force fought in Italy in a hard slog and claims to be (among many) the first in to Rome. June 4th.

They then participated in Operation Dragoon, the landings in Southern France August 14 1944, then to the Italian border.

Paris was liberated starting August 19, so unless he was detached and hauling ass through heavily occupied territory, it doesn't quite make sense, since the unit wasn't involved in and aroound Paris.

Again, minutiae, so as I stated I have a problem.

Edit: I just wiki'd the movie, and according to them the movie takes place in EARLY June, which makes the timing even more suspect. They probably should have said mid June, so again I have issues. I should lighten up and enjoy.

  • 2 months later...

Finally saw this the other night and I gotta say I was disappointed...

I thought it was entertaining, but that's about it. When Hitler gets it I was like "What the hell? This is all fantasy BS."

I'd like to know what WAS true in the movie. Probably just that Americans fought Nazis in France.
