Gordon being suspended for the final game of the season means he won't play in enough games this year for the season to count toward free agency, so his chance to try and get a new contract moves another year away.

This is what I initially thought when I read about this. By finding some petty team rule to suspend him 1 game (at the end of a losing season) the Browns get an entire extra year out of him before he hits free agency.
