Prepping for Black Monday

I'm curious, at what point does Marvin Lewis find himself out of a job? Is the Bengals organization content with being a losing playoff team every year?

Ken Wisenhunt had a terrible season in Tennessee but his roster doesn't offer much.

Mike Zimmer's Vikings were brutal at times but 6 wins probably keeps him in place.

I think most of the firings are obvious. I feel like Tampa's season is worthy of cleaning house. But Lovie is a big name, they won't pull the chord after 1 year.

I think Ron saved his job by beating the Saints, Browns, and Bucs. There is tons of positivity about the team this week and that will affect Jerry. It shouldn't, at the end of week 16 we had 6 wins. That's not impressing anyone.

It's gonna be real interesting for sure.

Nobody but John Fox has made it past four years here, and Fox had an infinitely better résumé at this point than Rivera does.

Of course, Fox also had Hurney. They were called 'a package deal'. And while Gentleman and Rivera seem to work well together, I wouldn't put them at that level.

He's fired assistants before, but I can't be sure those were 'his guys'.

Rodgers is an old college teammate, so I have my doubts.

A quick search shows Rivera fired Fred Graves, Warren Belin, and John Settle from his famed 2011 "teachers" staff.

He had no prior experience with these guys. He also let go of a Special Teams coach Brian Murphy for "philosophical reasons" and replaced him with Richard Rogers. Basically it sounds like Ron wanted a guy that would do what he's told.

No matter who the Panthers decide to bring into any coaching position, as long as the team continues to draft BPA instead of need and try to fit them into a system, they will continue to wow fans with a winning season every 6-7 years.

Once they figure out how to design an offense that maximizes the players on the roster rather than develop an offensive strategy then try to force players to fit, they might be okay. This crap about, "We want to be a power run team..." while drafting players like Kenjon Barner, DeAngelo Williams and other non-power running players is stupid.

Rivera initially chose Settle over Jim Skipper, but then replaced Settle...with Skipper.

Minus a few exceptions, I'd say staffing is not his strong suit.

I am not convinced Gettleman has complete control over the Head Coaching position. Has a General Manager ever actually fired a Coach for us? Maybe Capers.

Gettleman and JR are in a situation where time is of the essence. The next coach might be the last, for both of them. Are they prepared to gamble? What happens if they stick with Ron and the team never improves? They will be making the Coaching switch a year or two from now and hoping it all comes together quickly.

Steve Smith playing for Baltimore tells me Gentleman's word carries a lot of weight with Richardson.

Mike Brown has a rep for being frugal in Cincy and Marvin Lewis has been willing to sign short 2 year extensions or like last year a 1 year extension to avoid  being a lame duck HC so he is kind of an enabler. Here's an interesting quote in 2012 from Lewis himself:

CINCINNATI -- Bengals coach Marvin Lewis agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2014 season on Tuesday, giving him more chances to pursue the elusive goal of winning a playoff game.

Lewis already holds the club record for tenure as a head coach, entering his 10th season. OwnerMike Brown offered the extension even though the Bengals are 69-74-1 under Lewis with only three winning records and an 0-3 mark in the playoffs.

Asked if he would still be head coach if he were the owner, Lewis laughed.

"Probably not," he said.

Extremely slow to react or change, averse to wasting money on the chance the team's performance might improve on the field.

Some qualities JR shares with Brown I think and almost guarantees Rivera's return next season.

Jason Garrett has disappointed every year as a head coach except this one

I actually think Jerry Jones' arrogance plays into this in the fact he won't even admit to himself his boy Garrett just isn't that good.

Doesn't want to admit the mistake, still waiting for that I told you so moment.

I could see Jones believing that.

Don't believe it's realistic though.

Jerry Jones has a penchant for believing impossible things stop being impossible around him. So, who knows? Maybe he pulls off some of his Jones magic. Most likely, Dallas ends up with Garrett back at head coach.
