Rivera: "Learned from first Atlanta game to stay aggressive"

ron is just dumb with occassional flashes of not being dumb but then reverting back to being dumb quickly.

they didn't stay aggressive yesterday. they backed off and the browns caught the lead. then we had to get aggressive all over again to come back. the browns shouldn't have come as close to winning as they had. we got the lead, went into the half and tapped the brakes. it was the same ol' story we'd seen time and time again. fortunately cam was able to make things turn around, but we need to not have to rely on that.

i'm beyond the point of believing he's turned a new leaf because we see it all the time. we are vying for a chance at the playoffs now in spite of him...actually you could say that we would have won the division outright were it not for him forgetting everythiung he supposedly learned last year and turning back to paddleboat ron instead of riverboat.

I honestly think they thought we would win 10-6 and were completely content to take the air out of the ball for 2.5 quarters in order to do so.  Then Cleveland got the TD and suddenly our offense comes out and looks nothing like it had since the first couple of drives and moves right down the field for a quick TD in response.  The play calling, tempo and overall sense of urgency in no way resembled what we had seen from the offense since well before halftime.  Its frustrating to hear about lessons learned when we keep having to pull games out of our butt because we refuse to go out there and put them away when we have a chance. It puts us in a position where one TO or even a bad penalty can cost us the game because once we get a lead we assume it will last the rest of the game and make no effort to extend that lead.

I have heard it all before.  I think he wants to believe but when it comes to nutcutting time he gets a bit scared.

He didn't do anything wrong in the first ATL game per se, it was the playcall on 3rd down that was atrocious.  It is okay being a bit conservative there, but that 3rd down playcall gave us no chance to get the first down and running out the clock and kicking an easier FG.

i thought the first ATL game was one of his worst mistakes. as soon as we got in to FG range our offense shut down entirely. we didn't even think about scoring a TD, it was all about running clock and getting the FG. that is one of the most limp-dicked coaching decisions i've seen.

Nothing wrong with playing for a FG there, but only if you can run the clock out anD kick it as time expires. Also okay to force theme to use their timeouts. But once you get to 3rd down you need to mrun a play that at least gives u a chance. Bootleg, QB draw, quick screen, etc.

The playcall was egregious, not that we were playing for a FG

it wasn't just the fact that we were playing for the FG. there was plenty of time left for an ATL rebuttle, and we shut down the offense for a long FG attempt.

couple that with the fact that we've been absolutely BURNED by making those exact same decisions over the past 4 years... it gets really hard to defend rivera's decision.

decisions like this come down to one thing: knowing your team. rivera clearly didn't know his.

And nobody is happy that he at least recognizes mistakes and is willing to adapt to improve them? Geez, how quickly we forget just how frustrating it is to have a coach that is so set in his ways that he refuses to change anything...no matter how often what he does doesn't work. Yes, Rivera makes mistakes, and some of them have hurt the team. But, there is no disputing that he self evaluates, and is open to changing his philosophy when he realizes it needs to be changed (even if his timing doesn't always jive with fan's timing).

And no, this is a different lesson from last year. Last year it was about being willing to go for it on 4th down rather than play it safe and punt/kick a FG. This year it's about staying aggressive when you have a lead late, even thought it is risky and can backfire. Yes, they are similar and deal with aggression, but are very different situations and lessons. IMO, Ron has both a conservative and aggressive side, but he's so afraid of making a mistake that he tends to lean towards being conservative until it's clear that approach isn't working. And since it is virtually a guarantee at this point that he will be back next season, at least try to be thankful that he is learning these lessons...after all, it's better late than never.

He doesn't change.

He temporarily alters ....then reverts back to his old ways.

Ron has been horrible late in games since 2011. Always goes back to him being conservative....every year he claims he learns from it and goes back to it

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

this is precisely the reason why everyone here hates rivera. he does not change, he does not adapt. it's the same dumb fug decisions every week.
