Still Want Rivera Gone

Rivera isn't as bad as his critics think that he is, and neither is this team---regardless of our division.

For those referencing the rules: The only way to even get on the road to justifying changing the rules is to get rid of divisions altogether and let everybody play everybody.  This would probably be horrible for the NFL, as rivalries are a big part of the culture.  It is what it is, and I have been watching since I've been six years old and don't see any reason to change it.  So the division is having an off year. That doesn't justify killing the goose that is laying golden eggs.

It's bad enough that every year you have some fans that whine about missing the playoffs with a better record than some team that made it, but to think that a team's fans would use it as a rationale to belittle the success of their team or its coach is somewhat perverse in my opinion.

Yes, for sure. There is no doubt whatsoever next season is going to be HUGE for the future of this franchise. No way in hell a losing record gets us in the playoffs again next season, there are two paths we will take next season. Path A; Make the playoffs with a winning record or Path B. Miss the playoffs and Rivera gets fired for sure.

There will be no rally in December, "finish strong" with a 8-8 record and Rivera stays, Rivera will be on the hot seat from week 1 starting next year. If we make the playoffs this year, and can make the playoffs again next year WITH a winning record, then sure he can stay

As much as I hate to admit it, this might be a terrible season to fire Rivera for the simple fact that a ton of big nam/big market teams will be in the market for HCs.

Chicago

NY (Jets and Giants)

Oakland

Miami

Atlanta

San Fran

All of those teams above will be in the market for a new HC, do you really want to compete with that? This might be one of the worst years ever for a small market team like us to be in the market for a HC. Those are huge market and very desireable coaching situations for HC candidates

I will say, if we could get Mike Smith, I would fire Rivera and hire him in a heartbeat but thats not happening.

    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
    • The lack of production is especially surprising given how much effort the team put into coaxing the best from him.  In just six short years he’s had the opportunity to work with 3 different GMs, 7 different head coaches and 10 different starting quarterbacks.  There’s literally no excuse to be made that one of those combos didn’t work.  It might be time to look withIAN.
