The Nightmare Scenario

I'll preface this by saying I live in Austin.  If San Antonio gets the Raiders and the Panthers somehow botch keeping Cam Newton a Panther for the better part of his career, I'm out.  Those two things would both have to happen.  I don't care who is coaching as long as the team is winning, but if they manage to lose Cam, which I think is a possibility, I have no faith in the organization to build a Superbowl caliber team EVER.

The whole nothing that we can't win until late in the year or until we are out of it will be more perception than reality if we win out. The reason we have struggles early is different every year but revolves around doing fruitbasket changes each year or having multiple injuries often at a key position. The one year we had relative stability we went 12-4. This year we have played better once our Oline settled down and we found some playmakers in the secondary. If Gettleman makes wholesale changes again you can expect to struggle next year early as well. If we retain our coaches hopefully we give them the personnel to run their schemes. We don't have coaches that can make wholesale changes to fit the personnel. We need personnel to fit the system. Same thing guys like Belicheck do every year.

We did it once without Cam and could do it again. I am a fan of the team and not a player. I was a fan before Cam and will be after he is gone. We have too many fans of specific players already. One less wouldn't hurt .

Prepare to get flamed.

Fans who leave because of Cam aren't fans, just people who follow their favorite athlete.

Anyone who is a real fan of the Panthers understands while JR is in office winning a super bowl will never happen, let alone back to back winning seasons. JR is a failure of an owner in building a winning team, according the the team's record the last 20 years, in being one of the worst in the NFL. He is a success however in the team's value, as a business, through PSL owners and tax payers who pay for the team to. E here, and for JR, that means he's successful, and for most native fans that's enough.

Not being able to keep a player like Cam should be expected for anyone who is a real Panther fan, who understands the kind of organization they're cheering for.

A lot of Cam fanboys really had no clue how the Panthers work or are run and a lot of them will be jumping ship when they figure out the Panthers will never be a perennial contender with JR and players of Cams talent have absolutely no reason to play for him. The Panthers are not an attractive team to play for, they just aren't.

It would just be another season under Hurney really. I mean if DG wants to go the Hurney route and not fire anyone and everyone be his friend thats cool. Still though I really doubt he will last that long because Jerry has to pay DG unlike Hurney. This team has glaring holes at ST,OL, and OC for coaching. If none of them get fired then we are just going to repeat our "success" this year next year.

People who were here in 2010 know I was all over Richardsons case for gutting the team and actually setting the table for all the bad contracts to follow when we had to overpay to keep talent here.

But Richardson has not been cheap nor has he failed to spend money historically so I don't think he is the reason we aren't consistent. I think that goes to more of a lack of philosophy or long range plan. Look at this year and last. We are doing so much just to field a team that there is little consistency. And if we fire all the coaches we will just be recreating it again. Sure maybe we make a few changes but until we have some consistency in personnel both on and off the field this team will continue to wax and wane each season.

I've been a fan since the 90's and losing a once-in-a-generation talent like Cam shows there's something rotten in the guts of the Panthers front office.  I'm not saying they will, I just think there's a chance.  And if a team moves into my backyard and that coincides with the most talented and player that brings with the most hope to my favorite team leaving?  I'm done.  The Panthers are so close to being a bottom feeder franchise it's scary.  Any team with Cam at QB should be contending for a winning record every season.  If you aren't, you have a serious problem with your franchise.

God, that just makes it sound like being a panther fan is like being an abusive relationship...

"But the good times are really good!"

"They can change, I just know it!"

"This time it will be different, you'll see!"

Do you deny it? I've had my heart ripped out by this team more times than any women lol.

Being a sports fan in general is a relationship.  A lot of us relate with our team on a personal level (some of us more so than others) and can take it pretty serious.

I'm just being honest.

If I survived the clause 2010 abomination I can survive another 7-9 8-8 season with Ronny boy

I think you are a bit delusional about both Cam and what it takes to make a winning team.

Let's go have a conversation with over half the franchises in the NFL right now and see what they'd give up to have Cam as their QB.  Teams struggle for DECADES to find a QB of his caliber.  He's played well in Carolina despite having a crappy coaching staff and minimal talent around him.  Delusional?  Please.

My reaction will depend on if Shula and Rodgers remain. If they are fired I'm cool with Rivera staying for another year.

If there are no changes I'll start a mini riot.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
