Huddle question: Do they pay Cam next year?

And what is your definition of "paid well"? Luke, in likelihood, will be the highest paid MLB ever. To think otherwise is asinine.

MLB yes, but you mentioned Watt, who is a DE, which prompted my response.

Your right on lukes personality but you forget he is reigning DPOY and he has an agent. He's likely to get the highest LB salary going.

I don't disagree with that.

I am not trying to make you choose anything...I am trying to fully understand you reasoning.

"It's not about 'sending the right message'. It's about making sure that, in the future, you're not in a situation where you have a player, any player, in a longterm deal with massive guaranteed money, because of the risks (injuries, mainly)."

^^^^ This is a very principle and logical policy. You want contracts that shift the burden of risks from the team to the players as much as possible. That's fair. Contracts 101.

What I am trying to understand is would you apply this policy indiscriminately.

Absolutely. I would use it as much as possible. It's also a reason I would stay far away from signing Greg Hardy (less about injuries, more about... You know, being crazy).

Understood. When Luke (because his agent undoubtedly is) ask the Panthers for the biggest contract in history of the NFL for a linebacker, you would franchise tag Luke, and then seek to trade or release him as he would represent too much cap being tied up in one player.

Lol, I never said I would release or try to trade him. Obviously, talking to you is pointless.

Gettleman and Richardsons have said Cam is our future at QB. Cam also stated his intentions were to remain in Carolina. I realize Cam will not come cheap but i believe a contract can be worked out that we can live with. The terms and wording of the contract will naturally determine the dollar amount and how it's to be paid.

If you are good enough at your job and you know for a fact there are other companies, as well as the one you're currently employed by, who are willing to bid against each other and negotiate with you to bring you to their company, would you not at least listen to what those companies are going to offer?

Or will you simply sign where you are now, without knowing how much money or what employment situation you left on the table?

The Red, among a few others, continues to take shots at my opinion on this subject, but it's simply common sense. Do you take the first job offer, or do you look at the entire portfolio of offers and find the one that works for you?

I'm not talking down Cam and I'm not banging on the team in this circumstance, it's a business decision. And smart businessmen look at all the offers they've been presented before making that decision.

And, for the record, one of my degrees is from Auburn. I consider myself an alum, of sorts, and I've met and spoken with Cam Newton. I think he's a helluva young man and a tremendous athlete. I also think he's a better QB than he's played for the Carolina Panthers. He needs a QB guru and I think he'll be an outstanding QB. If that doesn't happen in Charlotte, so be it. I want to see the kid succeed.

Except that's not really how the NFL works. Cam is under contract through the 2015 season. No team can even offer him a deal until he is a free agent. The deal is going to be done this off season I guarantee you. Also you saying your "kinda" an auburn alum doesn't excuse your crappy opinion. That's like saying I have a black friend so what ever I say next completely isn't racist. It doesn't change the fact your opinion is fundamentally wrong in it's premise. Cam will only be getting a deal from us because he's going to sign and stay with this team. It's really as simple as that

Except he won't be the reigning dpoy when. His contract talks come up. He'll get paid very well for a MLB but it will most likely cap out at around 10-12 mil a year. We are looking at around a 50-60 mil a year contract which is totally manageable in today's nfl.

For anyone who thinks we aren't going to be able to field quality talent because of these contracts doesn't really get how the NFL has changed in the last 10 years.

You're a pretty clueless moron actually if you believe half of what you're saying.

Are Peyton Brady Rodgers Ryan flacco rivers stafford cutler romo dalton kaepernick or brees bad business men because certainly took the contract their team gave them and didn't look around at other deals?

Cam signing a deal here doesn't make him any less of a businessman. You're the moron for even suggesting that he is going to wait until he's a free agent. The team WILL extend him long term before his contract even gets close to being done.

All of what I said was true. That's how teams handle their franchises qbs. You're on crack if you think they'd let cam get an offer from anyone else

The only part that matters is the guaranteed part. And there are ways to restructure that so the cap hit can be managed. Cam isn't going to bankrupt us as long as Gettleman thinks that he is the future because they will reach a good deal for both sides. If Cam plays his cards right he will find that he can make mor endorsement money than he can a salary. He knows that winning is what will make him an icon and entertainer and as long as he thinks the Panthers will be improving and giving him the line he needs, he will want to play here which is a win win for both sides. Money maters for sure but when you know you are never going to have to work again if you don't want to because you will have millions, things like winning end up being the most important once the money is a given.
