There are video games and then there is Far Cry

More than a month. I'm just halfway through the story and I've had it for a couple weeks now. And I STILL have a lot of side-missions left. Most of my time has been liberating outposts, liberating bell towers, and hunting.

A lot to do, and a lot of ways to do it. Hell, I cleared an entire northern outpost with nothing but landmines and C4 last night. Twas glorious.

Eagles are fuging assholes though. They piss me off.

Just don't stop for long. If I hear one, I just keep hauling ass. I get tired of getting swooped on. Especially when I'm being attacked by a damn rhino because one happens to be nearby when I'm taking out a hostage taker for karma. That's one thing I don't necessarily like much about this game. My only real gripe. Passive animals that won't attack you, like rhinos or yaks, will attack if you shoot anywhere near them.

I've gotten where I use the syringe that makes animals avoid you almost all the time. Had to pick a poo ton of leaves due to it, but it's keeping me from losing my mind.

I think the reason for the animals attacking after fire is because they usually help you and go after the bad guys if they are shooting too. I think that is bad ass. I love just watching an animal take out everyone and I barely do anything at all.

Yep, liberating an outpost with an elephant is glorious. Arrow to the ass and watch him wreck poo.

Has anybody tried taking down a fortress or a hard outpost with JUST the bow and no other weapons (not counting takedowns)? About to try it on the last two northern outposts. Hopefully do it with no alarms and without being detected. Kinda want to just run into one and do it quickly. Go all Oliver Queen on Pagan's guys.

I just waited until after they got weak. Whenever you take down 1 of the big bosses, their fortress turns from hard to weakened and easier to take over.

I know that. I just like using the bow exclusively because it's satisfying as hell and it's quick. Also, don't have to refill ammo as much. Just go back through after and pick up arrows. I know for Yuma's fortress, after it got weak, I ALMOST was able to take it down with just arrows, but got spotted by the ONE guy I didn't spot while casing the place. Hit the alarm on me and I had to resort to my assault rifle by the end of it.

Also, don't try to hunt a rhino with just a bow. It is not a wise idea. I was going for the karma and the last two skins I needed to craft an upgrade. It took 15 arrows and 2 deaths for me to take down one, and the only reason I was able to was because I got on top of a rock when he charged me.

Is it as repetitive as FC3?  It was a fun game but you just did the same thing over and over.

Like any game, it's "repetitive". GTA is repetitive. Assassin's Creed is repetitive. Most games like this can be deemed repetitive. You still have to take down outposts (or not, if you like having bad guys on every road every few hundred yards). You still have liberate bell towers. You still have collectibles. You still unlock weapons by completing certain objectives. The upgrade system to your character is somewhat similar to FC3, but you don't have the tattoo (honestly, I liked the tattoo thing in FC3. Wish this game did something similar). The missions are all the same basic idea: get to this point to collect this item or take out this guy. Side missions are obviously repetitive. Kill this guy. Kill these guys. Take a picture of this guy after you kill them. Kill this animal with this weapon. Hijack this truck and bring it here. Or blow it up.

So, yeah, it's repetitive. The thing is, it's a gorgeous game, great environments, and it's just fun to play. The fortresses add another element. Basically just real big outposts with walls surrounding them, and typically only one direct path in or out. It's just something different. As stated earlier, they are the hardest of the "outposts" to liberate, but get weaker once you complete their respective story mission. Regardless, if you get spotted and they set off an alarm, it gets very hard very fast.

Another thing I don't think FC3 had that this one has is the karma system. You get karma for doing certain things (killing animals with just a bow, for instance) and events. Random karma events pop up in the world as you are running around, and if you complete them, you get a little money and karma. Karma is needed to unlock certain weapons, but I think that's all it's really good for.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
