Interesting note on check plays

There is a difference between checking out of a play and audibling.

Often times, you will hear the announcers talk about there being more than 1 play called in the huddle and at the LOS, based on what the defense is showing, the QB has the decision to stick with the original playcall or check out of it into the other play.

Audibling is different than that.  You are deviating from what was called in the huddle completely.

There probably is a check on 80% of plays.  When you hear a QB screaming "kill" he is killing the first playcall and telling the offense they are going to the second one.  That is a check.  QBs do it all the time.  Cam does something like that every week.  It is the QBs job to identify the defense and if necessary, check out of a bad play and check into the best play possible.  An audible, which is what Shula said Newton is only allowed to do 35-40% of the time, is different.

While I am sure Gil deserves some credit, the majority goes to Steve Buerlein who had a great year and was tough as nails. If I remember correctly that offensive line that allowed 50 sacks . And let's not forget wesley Walls, Patrick Jeffers, and Moose who had over 1200 yards. We couldn't run the ball so Steve aired it out back before the rules favored the offense so much. He had 36 TDs and 4400 yards on 576 attempts. Completed 60%. I think the 4400 is a franchise record for passing yards.

A lots of coordinators could have worked with that. Getting rid of Beuerlein led to Seiferts downfall and not until jake had his big year in 2005 did we come close to scoring that many again.

Of course, without a doubt, lots of people deserved credit for a productive offensive effort in 1999.

Could we agree that Gil didn't shackle the offense that year?

In contrast, it seems like our current coaching staff is afraid to release the hounds. They rely too much on a ball control offense and typically go into a shell once the team is ahead by 3 points or more with most of the game yet to be played.

Gil was certainly not afraid to use a vertical attack to score points as witnessed in the final game of that season.

The last OC we had that was worth a damn was Dan Henning. I really did dislike Chud although his offense put up points in bunches and I think Shula really does try his best but he is just never going to be up to snuff.

3rd-and-draw Henning?

Are we talking a checkdown or an audible? Are we talking calling a different play or a check between Cam and the receiver based on how the defense is lined up.

Additionally some plays like a read option has several options depending on what the defense is doing so there is not an audible needed.

If it any consolation, Shula lets Newton do more than Chud did if I remember the conversation from 2012.

lol im not talking about the checkdown option on a pass play. im talking about being able to check out of the called play. as long as the new play is within the same formation its really not difficult, so its not a matter of Cams understanding.

What Siefert did to Buernlein was a crime. He was let go for Jeff Lewis to start which lasted a half a preseason? How could you dump a guy that set team records for an unproven QB?

I hope we jettison Shula no matter how we finish. I feel we need someone with an imagination to run this offense I don't expect Cam to run the ball every time but someone who can use his talents a bit more.
