Cam's First Facebook Post Since the Accident

Its sounds like you are the one that doesn't understand what a fact is.

These things will probably happen, but it is not 100%.

Under this definition there would be almost no facts because reality could change in totally unexpected ways. Because we have no legitimate reason to question those things, we can state that "the sun rises every day" as a fact and while it may not happen some day, we have no reason to believe that will happen any time soon and thus the statement could be plausably regarded as a fact (reality, truth, etc).  While it is true that "the sun will rise tomorrow" is a prediction, it is one that is substantiated by a good deal of observations and all available evidence.  I think it is fair to say that the sun will rise tomorrow is the truth.

That being said, there is absolutely no evidence that science will eventually resolve every question that mankind has.  Science will definitely resolve questions that still plague mankind, of that we can be sure from the progress of science, but we can't be sure of which (we can make educated guesses based on the current body of knoweldge in any one topic), but the idea that it is a "fact" science is going to resolve all of humanity's concerns is incorrect. That is a belief - one that is fine to have - but a belief none the less.  Scientific progress is absolutely non-linear in many areas, so the idea that science will resolve every question seems to be unfounded to me.

i'm glad he's ok… it's been a scary couple of days. hopefully this brush with disaster gives him a new perspective and lights a fire under his ass.

that said i can't help but shake my head when people attribute their surviving car crashes to god's protection. more than 3,000 people die in car crashes every day in the u.s…. it seems arrogant to suggest jesus had his hands on your steering wheel but decided to take a smoke break when the other 3,000 careened off a cliff or whatever. oh well, superstitions gonna superstition.

That number is very inaccurate.  There's actually only about 100 deaths per day in car accidents in the US.  There are well over 3000 car accidents per day though.  If Cam wants to think there was some divine intervention at play here, I don't think that's arrogant at all, regardless of my opinion on its plausibility.  Considering the conditions of the accident, Cam IS extremely lucky to not be severely injured or even killed.

Sheds some light on why so many religious people are terrorists.

Smh. Why don't we try to specify who these "religious people" are? Sounds to me like you have lazily grouped all people who have faith of any kind into the category of being a terrorist. That sir is preposterous. Now try again, but please do by giving evidence of which people/religions are currently committing acts of terror upon innocents.

This is also why the afterlife meme is dangerous and we should actively work against its spread in our society.

And may I ask? How would you like to go about actively working against its spread in society? Smh. So in your book, the only people who have the right to express what they believe, are those who agree with you. Everyone else should just shut up. I believe in Heaven and hell and nothing that any atheist says is ever going to change that.

Just responding to your quote that we should actively work against it. Sir, there is nothing dangerous about my belief in the afterlife. It actually brings peace to me and many other Christian believers versus believing that we will just stop existing and become dust. One of the rewards for people like myself, is that someday we will actually be reunited in Heaven with our loved ones, like my sweet little grandmother who passed away in 1998. My beliefs shouldn't be dangerous to you or anyone else. I am not standing by a school bus in Israel with a bomb on my back and waiting to make Allah proud and receive my 70 virgins. They, those terrorists follow a false God. A God that has created a culture and worship of death and that has been sweeping across the earth for centuries. It has never changed. It has always been violent and they do it in their God's name. I say their God's name, because it is not the same God that they follow. Despite the popular moral equivalency belief that the God and afterlife of Muslims is the God and afterlife of Christians, it's just not true. The work that I have done in God's name has been to give hope and share God's love with the heartbroken in my community and also on mission trips to countries like Japan. The Christian afterlife is simply not a danger to you or anyone else.

Cams post was beautiful. Nothing wrong with it at all. It is wonderful to see the humility in him. He knows that he is not God and irregardless he should always give thanks to God for everything he has including his next breathe. I would love to sit down with Cam someday, just to talk about his faith. He truly seems like a good guy.

You having the idea isn't dangerous and it isn't at all my concern that you do.  It is my concern that the meme causes some (a formidable amount) of people to act in ways dangerous to themselves and more importantly others.  Whether they believe in some future reward, treat others with scorn and derision for worldly ways, or any other of the unlistable amounts of negative irrational side effects the idea causes in human social behavior this is dangerous at a societal level greater than a single tribe because of how it changes rational presuppositions.

A terrorist's god whether false or not simply has no bearing on the changes in the interpretation of reality brought about by a belief in an afterlife.  I am not sure how to respond to your brief weighing of Islam versus Christianity but for the purposes of my previous statement which you quoted I am not interested in the specific afterlife or religious belief itself.

I never realized Cam was a Christian. I have never seen him join the prayer huddle at the end of games. Personally I hope he continues to share his faith. My opinion of Cam went up significantly with that facebook post. Maybe it is genuine when he gives a kid a ball and not shrewd marketing. Way to go Cam.

Kral, I am sure you are a decent guy.  I am sure that we could sit down and enjoy a cold beer together and not kill eachother and actually enjoy the conversation.  You didn't personally attack me or use inflammatory language which I appreciate.  Now to respond to your post.

Glad that you agree that my belief in the Afterlife is of no danger to you or anyone else.  If you thought otherwise, then I would be wasting my time, because you would be crazy and I cant have a logical debate with a crazy man.  You did say however that it causes a formidable amount of people to act in ways dangerous to themselves and more importantly others.  When you say dangerous, what do you mean?  Do you mean possibly life threatening or threatening to their emotions?  Please specify.  If you did mean life threatening, then once again, I ask you to back that statement up with facts.  What you will find is that your Christian family, friends and neighbors are of no threat to your life.  There are no people being murdered by Christians for not converting.  No be-headings.  No school buses being blown apart and no Christian Army marching across the country and killing all those who don't believe as they do, like in IRAQ.  Now there is plenty of evidence of another religion, Islam, of doing those exact things even as I type these words.  You simply can not have a rational and fair debate if you have morally equated the 2 religions and grouped them together.  It is extremely offensive to me as a Christian to be lumped together with those committing horrendous crimes against humanity, that is shown on the news every single night.

Now I did also, see that you said that they, I am assuming Christians, treat others with scorn and derision for worldly ways.  I agree with you.  Some Christians do just this.  This is where they go way wrong.   It is wrong for Christians to judge non believers for not following the bible and living their lives in that way.  What they should be doing is not judging but loving.  I am sorry for anytime that some arrogant Christian has done this to you.  It is wrong.  Let me give you an example of where I am and how I believe Christians should act.  I am in a nursing program.  One of my fellow classmates who I had become friends with is Gay.  After he told me the truth, I said to him, "You know that I can't tell you that I agree with your lifestyle, but I must tell you that you are a good young man and that I love you as the person that you are."  You see I don't have to agree with his life and tell him its ok, if I disagree with it.   I can be friends with him even if he  lives a lifestyle that I disagree with.  However, I do have a calling and responsibility to show love to him, because he deserves that.  If God loves him, which he does, then it is my responsibility to love him as well. Christians who do otherwise are doing a greater wrong than the ones they are pointing fingers at.

In conclusion, the CHRISTIAN afterlife meme is not dangerous.  It gives hope to millions and millions of people world wide and is the reason that so many Christians are willing to risk their lives on mission trips that bring peace, hope and comfort to those around the world who have suffered terrible calamities such as the Haiti earthquake and the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand.

Anyways, not much more to say other than Go Cam! Go Panthers!
