Sorry man that sucks ... like someone said made me think of Private Joker's ridiculous reaction to his camera being stolen:

Oh and if you can't win in the battle of hackers brick the damn thing so all they can do is try and sell a blacklisted phone to some schmuck or part it out ...  make them hurt too

full metal jacket was the first thing that flashed through my mind when i realized what'd just happened. thank god i put my wallet in my other pocket or i'd be up poo creek without a paddle.

anyway i've tried to trace the phone, but to no avail. turning it into a useless brick is an option, but the problem there is once you've locked it out, you lose the ability to track it by GPS… at which points it's just as useless to me. all i really do is spite the asshats that took it. which is fine i guess, but it doesn't do me much good.

When traveling, I've always used a passport wallet with a necklace that I wear around my neck but under a button down shirt, I've also looped it around my belt and back pocket when not wearing a button down shirt. so if someone ever tried to steal it, unless they had a knife ready, they werent going to get far, maybe 18 inches.

never had someone try to snach and grab, but I have been scoped out a few times when I was in brazil.

log into your gmail account and look for this in the very bottom right:

j1UU5IT.png

click details and it'll show the IPs that have logged into your account, their location, what browser, etc

unless the shitnugget is using a proxy or vpn then you've got their IP

e: oh yeah it's worth noting that you can log out concurrent sessions from that area if someone somewhere else is logged in to your account

is there any way to get an extended session log? it only gives me the last day, but all but one are mine. the one that's theirs is from accessing gmail through the phone, but the IP address is registered in hanoi… it has to be a proxy, there's no way my phone made it to hanoi in less than a day. i know the asshat logged in with chrome cause i saw it in a notification, but i can't see that details for that now

phillyb, what city are in you in now (Ho Chi Minh?) My cousin and her husband used to live in HCM but moved to Hanoi. btw, you gotta watch out for those damn kids selling the lottery tickets as well as hot girls on scooters. those little fugs are persistent as hell and I'm sure if they get you surrounded, they'll try to ****** your wallet as well.

Edit: guess s.n.a.t.c.h. is a banned word.

yeah HCMC. headed up to hue tomorrow to spend some time around the DMZ, khe sanh, da nang, son my, etc.

Cool. My mom is from Da Nang. Grandparents used to own a store near one of the bridges (not the big/dragon bridge), the one next to it. Commies took it over and threw them out. Everyone in the area still knew my mom (at least 10 years ago) and I've got plenty of aunts/uncles/cousins still living next to the river. If you see someone hammering ship anchor links to re-use the metal, it might just be an uncle of mine. (My mom did have 15 siblings). I'm definitely related to some of the women at the locals market near the bridge.

The tunnels @Cu Chi are cool. There were two sites you can visit, my cousins husband took us to the least tourist one. If I had realized you were heading to Viet, I'd probably asked if he wouldn't mind me sending his contact info (if you needed a local emergency contact). He's a current Special Forces Reserves and has access and friends in the US Embassy in HCMC. His advice to me was that Viet men still bluster and bark more than bite. If you stand your ground, they'll eventually back down. His opinion is there's still some psychology ingrained that American's are bigger/tougher that carries over from the war. He also hides that he is fluent in Viet, and will speak in broken Viet even though he's lived there for almost 16 years now.

Dunno if much has changed, but we were always told to throw our trash on the road. There were no trashcans in the streets of Da Nang. The city paid people to clean them at night/early morning. And all trash is sifted through looking for value. Probably why I get irked when people complain about being poor in the US.

Have fun. Probably still hot in DaNang, but at least it's not summer. (yes I went in June) So fugging hot the locals actually close up shop in the middle of the day to go home and rest. There is absolutely no one on the streets.

i'm not sure if i'll make it to danang or not. i'm leaving for hue in a couple hours, but i'm pretty much headed straight for the DMZ after that. i fly back to HCMC out of hue, and by the time i get back from khe sanh/dong ha i won't have much time left and a trip south might be asking too much. i'm gonna try to make the cu chi tunnels on my last day in saigon… actually the different versions of the tunnels, on for tourists and the other for locals, is heavily related to my thesis research. i'll be going to the vinh moc tunnels north of the DMZ as well.. they're not altered at all other than the addition of lights.

saigon is fuging sticky and nasty… i'm hoping hue will be a little better.
