Post Your Opinion On Selling Autographed Memorbilia

I can go buy an auto'd piece and it, to me, is like 'Look what I have, ooh'. Now to go get an auto, thats more like 'Look at what he gave me'. Personalized or not, I get the sig, its mine, not going anywhere but on the walls with the rest of the swag. I cant knock the guy who goes and gets it to sell, 'cause I might be the guy buyin it. Now, the ones that charge ridiculous amounts for someones auto are assholes. I saw a D.Will signed helmet the other day going for over $400. Thats sick and disgusting, considering. But if you go get an auto, put it up on eBay, sure you should get somethin for your trouble, just dont be tryin to rape people's wallets...

An autograph made out to my son would be 10 times more valuable to me than any non-personalized signature and that would be because I want the autograph because of my love of team and admiration of the player....not profit.

Bingo.

But I do have a couple JD autographs that I didn't obtain myself...my step-daughter gave them to me at Christmas (she bought them in a store).

It seems that when I go to training camp, I get snubbed by some players at times because of what I wanted to get signed, like a figure or something. How do they know if I am there to try to make money off of their signature or just getting something signed for my personal collection? Steve signed a football for me a few years back, but I've tried to get him to sign a few other items since then and he skipped over me. I would never sell an autographed item because it means the world to me. How do players know your intentions when they are signing autographs anyway? I'm a huge Panthes fan and have a collection of autographs from over the years. No intention of making money off of them though. I will buy something off of ebay if I think it is a good deal. But it does mean so much more to have the player sign it himself in person!

I don't get the thing with autographs. The desire for another person's signature is creepy at best. I believe the act of getting autographs was a practice established to validate a particular "experience" between an ordinary person and another who they themselves believe to be famous in some way. If that is true then seeking out and buying autographed items that do not document a personal experience for the purchaser is about the dumbest thing I can think of wasting your time and money on.

As far as selling autographed merchandise goes. Why not? The core of our economy these days is dumb people wasting their hard earned money on overpriced and unnecessary bullsh|t anyway. To me the only useful purpose an autographed piece of "memorabilia" has is its potential for profit. Sell away.
