That's what I was wondering. So if I wanted to pick some steaks up on the way home and throw them on the grill, this is not the ideal thing right?

I think that the idea that its "a smoker more than a grill" is a pretty gross simplification of the BGE.

Its absolutely what you would want to grill your steaks on.

Its a fantastic grill that is also a great wood fired stove and a very competent smoker.

Its got a serious price tag so if you don't do a lot of outdoor cooking and smoking its definitely not what you want.  But if your serious about grilling and smoking and don't have the space or desire to have a dedicated smoker and a wood fired oven along side of your grill then its the best all in one money can buy.

You still have to add charcoal and wood, though, don't you?

Not nearly as much as you'd think.  Of course it depends on the size you get but your initial load of charcoal/wood will last 12+ hours.  That's what makes the BGE so good.  It's extremely airtight and insulated which allows you to control the airflow perfectly.  With most smokers the majority of the heat is lost so you have to constantly feed it more.  I've never known anyone that had to add more during a smoke, no matter how long.

For years I have been using a barrel smoker. On the barrel smoke I just recently did a 5 hr smoke, I had to use almost 2 bags of match light charcoal ($20)! Basically every 30-45 mins I had to continue to add more coals. And I was only able to get my smoker up to 300 briefly, may of the cook was at 250. It sucks having to monitor it for all those hours and keep adding $$$$ more coal!

The premise to the BGE is you set it to the temp you want, it maintains the heat for 12+ hours without the need to add coal or babysit it! Want to smoke a butt for 12 hours? Set the temp you want, goto bed and the next morning, butt for breakfast!!!!

Dude, use lump charcoal and a chimney. Never use Matchlight for smoking (or anything else).
