Mike Shanahan

Mr. Scot

Don't insult Holmgren like that... :)

There are some people who had always said that Shanahan was overrated. After Washington, I tend to believe them.  I want people in Charlotte that at least I can fool myself into thinking that they know what they're doing.  Shanahan does not pass the test.

I've been a Shanahan critic too.

But again, given his history, having him come aboard in some role is very conceivable.  It'd be a near certainty if Kyle got the head coach gig and a strong possibility if it went to Kubiak.

Well you could put a couple of those last years on Bruce Allen. Boy does he make Marty Hurney Look like Ted Thompson.

Valid.

And I'm a longtime critic of 'full control' guys.  In today's NFL, it's too much work.

Coach, or GM.  Don't try to be both.

To be fair, Alfred Morris was a pretty good pick. Roy Helu and Jordan Reed aren't so bad either.

Trading the farm for RG3 though...

Right, and Hurney had his Hardy, Munnerlyn, Hangartner, etc. Average to above average drafter that makes stupid trades. I think that's how I'd peg those two. Don't forget that Shanahan was also GM in Denver (I believe that Sunquist was mostly just a cap guy with an honorific title) for some pretty bad drafts, if I remember correctly.

I just want a coach who can motivate players, makes sure the best/most aggressive players on the team are playing in the games, knows when to call timeouts, and doesn't play scared at the end of games.

Other than that, it should be up to the GM to field a good roster and the players to do their jobs.

Not discussing him as a coach, just as a front office / personnel type.

What do you think went wrong with Kubiak in Houston?  Was he simply there too long, or is he honestly not that great of a HC?

Some folks think it was crappy GMs (Charley Casserly and Rick Smith).

To be honest though, a lot of great head coaches struggle their first time out. Check the records of guys like Marv Levy and Bill Belichick in their first jobs. You'll find they were nothing special.

USA Today on what Shanahan is looking for:

"He turned down an opportunity to join FOX, which would have kept him closer to the game.

...

"If I get back into coaching, it would have to be a situation where there was a realistic opportunity to win a Super Bowl," Shanahan, 61, told USA TODAY Sports.

In other words, he's not interested in taking on the type of massive rebuilding job that he couldn't pull off in Washington.

...

Shanahan, living in Denver, said that beyond taking over a team with talent in key positions, there are at least a couple other factors that he would desire as a coach to make a Super Bowl mission realistic.

One would be salary cap room that would allow him to compete in free agency.

Of course, in Washington, he inherited an older roster and

was saddled by a $30 million cap hit over two seasons as the team's penalty for violating the spirit of the uncapped season in 2010.

The other essential element?

"It would have to be with the right ownership," Shanahan said.

Mike would never do carolina, he's a super hollywood type. Watch if a team or two heads to LA, then I believe you'll see this fake tan face surface.

It would be sort of, hmmkm cannt find a good word.... if ron gets fired and then partner with mike as a DC...... that has LA written all over it.

Not even if his son got the head coaching job?

Griffin was still in college when Shanahan's team went 6-10 and then 5-11 in 2010 and 2011.

Also, who was it who gave up all those picks to draft Griffin?

Look at the qbs those years and it has been well documented mike didn't want rg3 it was the owner who pulled the trigger on that deal. Mike shannahan is good coach.

So a little while back, I talked about the notion of bringing a possibly-soon-to-be-former head coach with previous ties to Dave Gettleman into the front office in a personnel role () if Gettleman were to decide the front office needed some changes made.

Here's another possibility in that same vein.

Mike Shanahan is the coach that brought Gettleman his first experience as part of a Super Bowl winning organization.  Gettleman was a scout with the Broncos when Shanahan coached John Elway and the Broncos to their first Super Bowl victory.

Shanahan's most recent job was with the Redskins coaching suspected coach killer RG3.  At the time, Shanahan was not only the head coach, but held the title Vice President of Football Operations and had final say on personnel matters.

Shanahan's son Kyle and protege' Gary Kubiak are both expected to be hot head coaching candidates in 2015, with one or both conceivably interviewing for the Panthers job (assuming it comes open).  Dave Gettleman and Kubiak were colleagues for three years in Denver and he'd be acquainted with Kyle through his dad.

So how would you feel about having the elder Shanahan onboard in a front office type role?

in my opinion, outright no.

Coughlin, there's a full on link.  Gettleman had some amount of input there. No clue how he and Tom got along, but fair enough.

Gettleman was with Denver two decades ago, as an area scout.  He wasn't in the building most of the time.  Connecting him loosely to Shanahan, yeah, I don't know about that.

But simply on merit, no thank you.  Same for his kid.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
