Bill Voth breaks down Cam Newton's season

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I totally disagree with his conclusion that Cam should be a pocket-passer ONLY.

He's huge.  He's strong.  He can run.

LET HIM RUN THE BALL.

Running the ball isn't the reason his fundamentals have gone kerblooey in the 2nd half of this season.  ITS BECAUSE OF HIS SHITTY OFFENSIVE LINE.

He's a goddam weapon and some people want to decrease the caliber of the round?  I don't freakin' get it.

Very true about Newton's running.  This is very perplexing to me though.  We've all seen, for most of this season, how effective Stewart has been with the ball in his hands.  Multiple games where he's averaged 5+ YPC, but only getting 5, 8, 12 touches.  There's really no reason that Cam should be given a "green light" to run the ball, unless he absolutely has to.  He doesn't need to have a page of designed run plays, specifically for him.  This goes back to the coaching issues that have been mentioned over, and over.  We remember the FO saying, "sometimes, the answers are already on the roster."  They were right, to an extent.  We did/do have some answers on the roster, more than a couple, but the coaches chose the wrong answers out of the gate.  The problem is, they stuck with the wrong answers for far too long, and would likely still be sticking with them if not for injuries.  That's got to be on of the single biggest issues with this coaching staff.  Almost anyone could see, even since training camp,  Norwell>Silatolu, almost anyone>Chandler, Stewart>Williams, Godfrey was going to be garbage, KK should be starting, Avant wasn't needed... and the list goes on.  An argument could be made for Cason, as he looked somewhat decent in the beginning, but fell off fairly quickly.  Still... he was here far too long.

Because the coaching staff was always to desperate and clueless to allow Newton to only throw (even successfully as the first 5 games). And the OC, doesn't know how to get his other players involved (even when Stewart's running well), so not to rely on Newton.

I agree. The way Newton was throwing early in the season, I would never have tinkered with it when he became "healthier".

Unfortaunely, I think the dumb coaching staff listened to the equally idiotic national media chant of, "you need to run Cam", so the Panthers did. I didn't agree with it at the time. And I feel that increased work load, along with losing faith in the staff after the Cincy game is was effectively "did Newton in" IMHO.

I still say from the moment we saw the blurb to turn Cam loose or something to that effect its gone downhill. The Bengals game I thought the team turned the corner and was making due with what they had.

The Panthers/Cam had "turned the corner" presumably, until Rivera went for the tie, and the team continued to run cam more often instead of using the Cincy game runs as a one off.

If Cam wants to run the ball, he should switch positions to running back.

Can not disagree with this article at all.  We all saw it ourselves.  Cam was looking great in the pocket, then got healthy and our brilliant coaching staff went right back to the pistol offense as a base formation and tossed out the first four games as if they did not exist.

Bingo!

They're either stupid, and/or have rabbit ears (as usual per the entire organization) and let the media bait them into "turning Newton lose".

I never agreed with that. I like Cam much better from the pocket, running when he has to, the play breaks down.

Of course, the OC and HC, were clueless how to get anymore offense out of the team outside of increasing Newton's workload.

Bill Voth is a typical media *****. What does he know about football? Has he played the game or been a coach? You be the judge. He's associated with a nefarious social media agency and is suddenly getting all sorts of pub. His site is worse than the Observer's coverage and that's saying something.

Voth provides arguably the best Panthers analysis and coverage available.

the problem is, Cam's first "half" numbers are better than the second half, the supposed "running" half, but he had good success over three full years of running like crazy.

So, the thing is, explain why it's different this year.

Why is doing both successfully out of the question?

A quarterback who has to worry about running the ball, is a quarterback who's mind is divided.  It's literally the most difficult position in football, and yet we want to give a developing Cam something else to think about.

Why is doing both successfully out of the question?

Depends on how much.

If you want him to do it occasionally like Aaron Rodgers, you're fine. Frequently like Michael Vick, you'll get him killed.

You just can't sustain the amount of running that quarterbacks do in college at the pro level. Opponents are too fast and hit too hard. Over time you take on too much damage and your effectiveness suffers for it.

You have to transition to being a passer who runs as a complimentary threat if you want to be a long term success. There's just no way around it.

I can't agree with your opinion on Bill. He's level headed and does this best not to speculate and only deliver factual information. Also, the way he shows us (fans) how he's come to his conclusions is very transparent and is usually backed by lots of data and film. BBR (like the Huddle) is a gift. We're lucky to have these types of sites for a franchise so young and that is very up and down.

That being said, onto the article.

When Cam first came in the league, I thought just like Shula, "let's maximize what he does best", not thinking that at some point the league will catch up with him. It has. The team needs Cam to learn to play from the pocket as a QB. Cam Newton has the arm strength (can't teach) to be an NFL QB. Cam Newton can acquire accuracy (can teach - see mechanics). Maybe he's not going to be a 72% passer, but with time I believe that Cam can become a QB who completes a good percentage of passes. Cam becomes 1000% more lethal when he sits in the pocket makes 3 reads (let's say they're all covered) and is then able, with his ridiculous athleticism and size, to move out of the pocket. At that moment, he's special again. The defense (LBs and safeties) has had to honor his arm (drop into their coverage) and are now 10-12 yards from the line of scrimmage. In coverage, do you leave your man and move towards a 6'5" 250lb man or leave the 6'5" 250lb man (KB). This is the added dimension that having a QB like Cam Newton gives you. It's the Rodgers-effect; sure Cam isn't the QB that #12 is but it's the same idea. First, be a QB who gives your receivers a chance to make plays, then when you've exhausted the play and there are no other options, make a play. IMO, this makes Cam the dynamic player that we all want. He's halfway there (probably more than that).

I hope that our new OC (at the very least) is sitting at home drooling for the opportunity to utilize Cam in this way.

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
