This may not be quite the worst team in franchise history, but Gettleman's free agent signings this offseason were absolutely the worst in the 20 year history of the Panthers and I defy you to tell me otherwise.

I seriously doubt you've actually looked at our free agent history when you say this.  And heck, you're even counting the pre-lockout season when they pretty much let half the team walk.

If you had, you might notice that from 2008 to 2010, we didn't sign a single UFA.  In 2007, we signed only one, Deke Cooper.

They picked up signing free agents again in 2011.  This is what we got.

S Sean Considine

DT Ron Edwards

LB Omar Gaither

K Olindo Mare

WR Legedu Naanee

Boy, there's some impact players, eh?

How bout the year 2000 when this was our free agent haul?

OL James Dexter

CB Jimmy Hitchcock

DE Chuck Smith

DE Jay Williams

Or this bunch in 2004?

G Travis Claridge

CB Terrance Shaw

LB Brandon Short

Throw in that if you were to look back at the cap figures for those years, I'd say there's a good chance we had more to start with than we had this year.  Of course, given that Marty Hurney never worried about future seasons, we rarely finished with much.

Was this a bad year free agent wise?  Sure.

Worst ever?  Seriously doubt it.

I can't wait to see what next year's awesome free agent crop brings. All part of the master plan.

I don't know how much the cap will rise, nor the exact cap number we'll have after current contracts rise up a bit, but 20mil comes off the books from players not even on the team plus 13mil from Hardy...

it should help a little bit..

Yep.

The years when Capers had control weren't exactly anything special either.

Didn't even bring up that the Sean Gilbert trade was technically part of free agency too.

Ron Edwards and Brandon Short were contributors. The players we signed this offseason weren't just non-contributors, they actively made the team worse. Only comparable year was 2000.

You're reaching on those.  Technically Fernando Velasco could be called a 'contributor' this season too.

You can say this was a bad free agent season without calling it the worst ever.  When you go for the cheap hyperbole, you undercut your argument.

there's no cap penalty if he's a june 1st cut in 2015 so i wouldn't worry about year two of the roman harper era in carolina.  actually i think there's $1 million + in cap savings if he's a june 1st cut

edit-just checked it's $1.5 million if he's a 2015 post-june 1st cut

Would there be a penalty if we cut him now? How does the June 1st thing work?

according to overthecap if we released him right now it would actually free up cap space immediately.  thing is, his base salary is due to accelerate next year and if we designate him as a post june 1st cut in 2015 that would result in about $400k more in cap savings.  he's as good as gone i think.

we're balls deep in a lost season as-is though and as far as i know he isn't destructive behind the scenes or pissing anyone off except the fans so he'll probably be kept around through the end of the season.

if you want to read all about june 1st cuts here's an article about it:
