because you say it is?

charles johnson's 2014 cap figure: $11,220,000

deangelo williams: $6,000,000

jonathan stewart: $4,585,000

wanna know how many players from hurney's last five drafts are still on the roster? i counted 7 including hardy and frank alexander.

I would think at very least 80 percent of the GMs we could replace Gettles with could have done a better job dealing with Hurley's mess than Gettles has. That's a chance I'm easily willing to take

Realistically it won't be over until 2016 unfortunately.

We will likely be dumpster diving again this offseason. Then things really start to clear off the books.

Likely coaching search and his ability to sign Cam and possibly Luke will be his biggest judgment barometers this offseason

The Hurney excuse is over for me this off-season...

No more passes for Dave in my opinion...

Steve Smith

first 4- 25 Rec, 429 Yd, 3 Td

last 8- 24 Rec, 390 Yd, 2 Td

Everybody bashed the living dog shít out of Dave for cutting Steve. Hell, that's still to this day why some dislike him. Well, there you have it. Steve came out of the gate like a pissed off bull and played his heart out. Then after playing Carolina in week 4 he reverted back to his true self. An old man who is just collecting a check. He's averaged 3 Rec 50 Yd 0.3 Td over the past 8 games since playing Carolina. Ironically, that's about what he averaged last year, and what he would've averaged this year if he was a Panther. How about that?

If Steve was here this year Carolina would still suck. He can't play OL or DB. It would've been a moot point. However, it would've guaranteed his 2015 & 2016 salaries (at age 36/37) & made him completely uncuttable & untradeable. So for those of you who bashed Dave over that move and wanted to keep Steve;

Lower your 2015 & 2016 salary caps by $12m when you're playing armchair GM & bashing Dave & saying he should've done this or that & signed this or that player. Hindsight is a bitch. You can't have it both ways. Dave has appx. $12m more in cap space to work with in 15/16 than you fools would've had. But hey, you would've had a temperamental 36/37 yr old WR!!! I'm sure Steve would've gracefully watched Benjamin diminish him to an afterthought and helped him develop.

Also....

Don't bring up the "disrespect" bullshít. Dave did not do Steve wrong. Dave did not bash Steve. Dave did not blindside Steve. Dave said Steve would be evaluated. Dave evaluated Steve & decided it was best if the team moved on. Dave informed Steve he would be released. Steve met with JR for a goodbye dinner before his release was announced publicly. Then Steve proceeded to act like a petulant, spoiled child who was told no for the first time.

And damn sure don't say "but but but Steve said he was gonna retire after 2015!" Bullshít. He wasn't gonna leave nearly $25m sitting on the table. I don't care what he said after being cut. He's a liar.

also gettlemanjack you can post your list of 25 GMs who faced the same cap problems the panthers do and turned it around in less than two years whenever you'd like

I could post a list of huddlers that could have been a better GM than Gettles has been this last year if i only had to pick a huddler to be our new GM. Should be really easy to find a better GM than Gettles if you don't consider just huddlers. It's a no-brainer to get a better guy than Gettles as your sub-manager if I'm JR. I would keep Gettles on in the front office as a contributor/advisor like Direct of Player Personnel. But we could easily do better at GM

Come on, mayne. We're on the brink of getting out from underneath some really bad contracts and you're taking back loading more contracts. On who? Mitchell and Munnerlyn? Do we really want to be overpaying for those caliber players 3 years from now? If Hardy was allowed to play, $13 million for a premier 4-3 DE isn't that ridiculous. We'll never know how it would have turned out, though.

First, can we agree on one point? Franchise tagging Hardy with no intention of re-signing him or trading him did nothing to build our roster. You do those kinds of things to make a Super Bowl run. There is no other legitimate reason for doing it.

Almost every FA contract is slightly backloaded. We're not talking about a Jonathan Stewart type backload, that was just stupid. But it is entirely normal for the cap hit to rise slightly in the later years. You do know the cap is expected to rise dramatically over the next 3 years, right?

And no one said anything about signing Captain or Mitchell. There were legitimate targets we could have signed and stayed within a budget. I started a thread on that very subject about a week ago.

I just don't support renting a player for $13 million for one year. I just can't.
