Sporting News projects that Rivera will be fired on Black Monday (Dec 29)

I don't think they can keep him at this point, fan base would literally riot if he's kept. Just like I'll riot if the new coach isn't an offensive minded young coach. Tired of DC's that don't care about offense or stepping on throats by pushing the score.

I think you justified keeping him to contine Cam's maturation......

Now, Cam says everything you would want a QB to say. Now you want him to grasp more difficult aspects than being handicapped in a ball control O.

How has it "mostly failed"???? It worked last year and didn't this year...

Not too many GMs could've done better with the money that was available.

95% of last year's roster came from Hurney. This year was Gettleman's first in full reign and it failed.

He could have easily drafted a tackle instead of a running back. He could have easily not signed Hardy and went with an end in the draft, saving money for lineman or secondary help. We could have brought back Ted Ginn, which would have infinitely helped our return game. We could have at least brought in a few veteran guards. Instead we gambled everything on Hardy, Roman Harper, and Bell/Chandler, and failed. That's on Gettleman.

Hard to argue that.

You compare Hurney's years to all other teams.....yes, he drafted well. Carolina fans dismiss his early picks. But he hit on nearly all of them....and you can't say that about most teams.

Luke

Newton

Stewart

Otah

Beason

Williams

Davis

Gross

Peppers

That is all first round picks.....which is arguably the best usage of first round selections in the NFL over that span.

So you can discredit Hurney and just look at his 2nd and 3rd rounders when Carolina hit it out of the park so consisant in round 1. Name 2 other teams that hit on the first round like that over that time span.

Hurney issue wasn't he drafted poorly......he gave horrible contracts and was overly loyal. Also was weak in FA.

Bad drafter? Nah. Too many other teams were actually bad at it. Yeah, he gambled some that blew up but again compare it overall to other teams.....drafting isn't what he did poorly. It was mostly everything else that came with the job

Precisely. Hurney was a very shrewd drafter early on, and was also active more in free agency. Stephen Davis, Jake Delhomme, Ricky Proehl, etc. were all brilliant signings, and our first few draft classes under him resulted in more contributors than busts. The only reason we remained competitive from 2002-2008 was that our first-rounders were consistently excellent and our teams had relatively few holes to fix. The problem is the cracks that started forming with age - we never prepared for an era after Jake Delhomme, Chris Gamble, Mike Minter, Mike Rucker, etc. Rather than focus on fixing them, we doubled-down and hoped for the best. It failed. Hurney was a very bad GM towards the end of it, but his early era was great.

If they're right, we're gonna be competing with six other teams for head coaching prospects in a year when there aren't as many great prospects as previous years have seen.

Ugh :(

Meh.  You can certainly have your opinion that there aren't many great coach prospects out there, but in my experience, the coaches and coordinators that are well thought of by sports community have about the same success rate as the ones that aren't thought of highly.

Yes. I said I was biased.

Hurney drafted well....in reality. So?

Any GM could of game and after Hurney was fired under the instruction to fix the salary cap....and note improvement.

Again, Dave doesn't actually have the resume to get all the blind support IMO he has gotten from day 1. I also think the Hurney card is overplayed.

He has shown some real stubbornness/ego since he arrived. Saw a glimpse his first year.....burned us this year. Dave thought he could improve us in actual on field talent this year.....he didn't. He was betting on find more lottery tickets in the dumpster and being cheap.....opting to go all in on a rental DE to make his NYG model D. Dave's moves this offseason gave us no shot....even if Hardy had played

Dont know in which universe you would call the 2009-2011 drafts (sans like 2 picks) "drafting well"

You left out everette brown who we had used a first rounder on. And looking at each pick individually is fine, but two running backs in 3 years? What about draft day trades for busts? Do those not count?

Considering we missed the playoffs in 7 out of his 10 full seasons, i would hope that selecting high picks would net better players. That said, look at the ravens (who mostly picked in the latter part of the draft)

Ed reed

Terrell suggs

Kyle boller

Mark clayton

Haloti ngata

Ben grubbs

Joe flacco

Jimmy smith

If you insist, i can find others but keep in mind you are not comparing apples to apples. Other than a few select GMs, most got fired for their busted picks, so does it really make sense to compare hurneys ten years with multiple GMs from some teams during that stretch?

Yes, we do "have" Hardy. We will be able to either tag him again or resign him before anyone else can. It's likely that we let him walk, but he is still ours until to keep.

You listed him as one of the things that would make us an attractive spot for a new hire when everyone and their brother knows we aren't going to re-sign him. Those reports from people close to the team go back to before Greg got in trouble. And franchise him again? Gettleman should be required to undergo a frontal lobotomy if he even thought about that.

So no, Hardy is not part of the core that would make the Panthers an attractive landing spot.

    • Who mentioned anything about money? I said they are bad people. When you have that kind of power you tend to be a jerk. It's common that most rich people think they are above everyone else.   It's why these owners always get caught up in some scandal. There are more than we know about trust me. Some pay off people to keep quiet. Hell we already dealt with it with JR. My issue is not with their wealth. My issue is what that wealth brings which can be some evil tendencies...
